The 2014 Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit took place on May 31st and June 1st at the Raceway at Belle Isle in Detroit , Michigan , United States and was the sixth and seventh races of the 2014 IndyCar Series .
Reports
background
After the Indianapolis 500 , Ryan Hunter-Reay led the drivers' standings with 40 points on Will Power and with 54 points on Hélio Castroneves .
The Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit was the first IndyCar event to feature two full-distance races in one weekend. It was the first of three so-called double headers in the 2014 season. There were two practice sessions on Friday, one qualifying and one race on Saturday and Sunday. Full points were awarded in both races.
The starting field was reduced from 33 to 22 vehicles. All vehicles that were not registered for the entire season were no longer used. There was also a planned driver change at Ed Carpenter Racing . Mike Conway , who competed in all street course races, replaced Ed Carpenter , who only drove the oval races.
With Castroneves (twice), Tony Kanaan , Justin Wilson , Scott Dixon , Conway and Simon Pagenaud (once each), six former winners competed in these Indys.
Don Oldenburg , Pagenaud's chief engineer, received a suspended sentence until early August for a social media offense.
training
In the first training session, Hunter-Reay set the fastest time ahead of Wilson and Castroneves. There were no incidents that resulted in a red flag. In the second training session, Pagenaud took the lead from Conway and Castroneves. The training was briefly interrupted three times after Hunter-Reay, Sebastian Saavedra and Wilson slipped.
1. Qualifying
The first section of the first time training was held in two groups according to the usual qualifying system for street courses. The six fastest drivers in each group came into the second segment. The remaining starting positions were determined from the result of the first qualifying segment, with the drivers in the first group being assigned the odd positions from 13 and the drivers in the second group the even positions from 14. In the first group Castroneves drove the fastest lap, in the second group Conway was the fastest driver. Hunter-Reay and Pagenaud, who had achieved the two best training times, were eliminated in the first group. Hunter-Reay damaged the left rear suspension in a slip with wall contact in the eleventh corner and finally took 21st place. Pagenaud hindered Juan Pablo Montoya , so that his two fastest lap times were canceled and he finally reached 17th place overall. Pagenaud expressed criticism of the race management's decision as he was already driving at the limit, but was not as fast as Montoya due to older and harder tires. In the second group, Power failed due to oversteer and came in 16th overall. He gave up before the end of the first half and didn't try to improve his time for as long as possible.
In the second segment of the qualification, the six fastest drivers qualified for the final section. Castroneves posted the fastest lap time. Besides him, Ryan Briscoe , Conway, James Hinchcliffe , Montoya and Jack Hawksworth made it into the third part of qualifying, the so-called Firestone Fast Six.
Castroneves ended up setting the fastest time, taking pole position ahead of Hinchcliffe and Hawksworth. Castroneves set a new absolute track record with his pole time.
Because Montoya drove an underweight vehicle, Penske was fined $ 5,000 . For an early engine change at Montoya, Chevrolet was deducted ten points in the manufacturers' standings.
1st race
Castroneves kept the lead at the start. Hawksworth went past Hinchcliffe into second position. On the fifth lap, Power and Pagenaud touched in the fourth corner. In doing so, Pagenaud damaged his suspension, so he was eliminated. To recover the vehicle, there was a yellow phase in which some drivers - including Hunter-Reay and Power - pitted.
After the restart, Castroneves kept the lead ahead of Hawksworth, Hinchcliffe and Conway. Montoya lost some position with deteriorating tires and finally went under green to an early tire change. In this section of the race, Takuma Satō stood in the pits for a few laps with a gearbox failure, but took up the race again. On lap 15, Conway understeer in the twelfth corner and retired. The accident triggered another yellow phase. Castroneves lost the lead with a pit stop and fell back to eighth place. In front of him were Graham Rahal , Marco Andretti , Power, Mikhail Aleshin , Hunter-Reay, Charlie Kimball and Montoya, all of whom were pursuing a different strategy and some of them had been to the pits before or not at all. Hawksworth, who was in second place before the caution period, pitted a few laps with a brake damage and started the race again behind.
Rahal initially led the race before pitting on lap 26. Andretti followed a lap later, who was also not yet at the pits. Power led the race for three laps before pitting for the second time. Now Aleshin was ahead for two laps until he stopped. Then Castroneves took over the leadership position again. He was leading by seven seconds ahead of Hinchcliffe, Dixon, Briscoe and Josef Newgarden . Rahal pitted again shortly after his first stop because his tires had worn off quickly. On lap 37, Newgarden retired after an accident in the seventh corner, so that another caution phase was triggered.
Briscoe, Wilson and Andretti pitted in this caution, Aleshin completed a drive-through penalty after interfering with Satō, who was four laps behind. Castroneves briefly stayed in the lead at the restart before pitting two laps later. Hinchcliffe, who was in second place, also pitted, leaving Dixon in front of Power, Carlos Muñoz , Kimball and Kanaan. After one lap, Dixon and Muñoz pitted, Kimball a lap later. Power was now in the lead and quickly expanded his lead to over five seconds over Kanaan, Rahal and Briscoe. The drivers who were at the pits were stopped by Andretti, led by Castroneves, who saved fuel. Power, Kanaan and Rahal pitted on lap 54 and 55 and came back on track in front of Castroneves' group. Briscoe led while Aleshin spun after contact with Hinchcliffe on lap 56, triggering the fourth and final caution. Briscoe decided to skip another stop and stayed outside.
After the restart, Power took the lead past Briscoe. After Rahal had overtaken Briscoe one lap later, Briscoe decided to make another pit stop. Rahal caught up on Power and put him under pressure. However, there was no attempt to overtake. While Hawksworth and Aleshin collided shortly before the end, Hunter-Reay was eliminated on the last lap after a wall contact.
Power finally won the race by a thirteenth of a second ahead of Rahal. Kanaan was third ahead of Wilson and Castroneves. Hinchcliffe, Muñoz, Carlos Huertas , Kimball and Andretti completed the top 10. With his 23rd IndyCar win, Power drew level with Tommy Milton in 18th place in the all-time leaderboard .
Hunter-Reay retained the overall lead after this race. However, his lead on Power was only three points.
2nd qualifying
The second qualifying was held in two groups. Each group had twelve minutes each. The first in each group received a bonus point for a pole position. The first place on the grid went to the faster of the two.
In the first group, Hinchcliffe was the fastest ahead of Conway and Muñoz. Dixon had technical problems and was last in this group. In the second group, Satō drove the fastest lap of the weekend ahead of Castroneves and Briscoe. Hunter-Reay had touched the track barrier and did not set a time.
Since Satō was the fastest overall, he got first place on the grid and all drivers in the second group were sorted into the odd starting places based on the qualifying order. The drivers of the first group got the even starting positions. Satō was the first pilot to achieve a pole position for the second time this season.
2nd race
Satō kept the lead at the start. In the middle of the field there was an incident in the third corner that triggered a yellow phase. Power sat down on the inside of the corner next to Pagenaud and tried to pass Newgarden as well. He touched Newgarden and turned it into Rahal, who then collided with Wilson. All drivers involved drove on. Power received a drive-through penalty.
On the tenth lap, Saavedra triggered another caution phase with an accident in the sixth corner. Satō went to the pits and gave the lead to Hinchcliffe. At the restart, Hinchcliffe stayed in the lead. In the 21st lap, Conway took first position. Conway later ran into problems with the softer tires. Four laps after Conway, Power took the lead for two laps, then Aleshin for one. Castroneves, who pursued a conservative strategy and was on the softer tires in the second stint on the harder tires after the first stint, went into the 28th. In the 34th lap Castroneves gave the lead for one lap to Hawksworth, took it again a lap later and built a lead on the rest of the field.
At his second and final pit stop on lap 50, he had such a big lead that he stayed in the lead. Castroneves opted for the harder tire compound again for the final phase. In the meantime Rahal had given up the race. Sébastien Bourdais had an accident on lap 59 in the fourth corner and triggered a caution phase that destroyed Castroneve's lead of around ten seconds on Power. In this yellow phase, Hunter-Reay gave up with an electrical defect.
At the restart, Power, who was now in second place behind his team-mate Castroneves, behaved defensively so as not to jeopardize a double victory. In the 65th lap there was a final caution after Andretti Satō had turned in the fifth corner. Both drivers drove on, Satō lost a lap due to the incident. Power was defensive again at the last restart.
Castroneves won the race before Power. It was Castroneve's 29th IndyCar win. So he drew level with Rick Mears in eleventh place on the all-time list of the best . He achieved his first in 2000, also in Detroit. It was Castroneve's 78th place on the podium, with which he drew level with Dixon in ninth place in the all-time best list. Kimball came in third. Dixon was fourth, Hinchcliffe fifth. The top 10 completed Pagenaud, Aleshin, Muñoz, Kanaan and Briscoe.
In the overall standings, Power took the lead from his team mate Castroneves. The previously leading Hunter-Reay fell back to third place.
After this race, Castroneves, Huertas and Power were the only drivers who had completed every lap in the previous seven races.
