Reports
background
After Eliseo Salazar left the team, RAM Racing decided against participating in the Grand Prix of the USA East, which was held on the Detroit street circuit, which was slightly modified compared to the previous year .
training
As it was raining during the first qualifying session on Friday, all pilots achieved their respective best times on Saturday.
Between the pole sitter René Arnoux and the second Ferrari 126C2B of Patrick Tambay , qualified Nelson Piquet for the second place. It was followed by Elio de Angelis in what is still the only Lotus 93T with a turbo engine, ahead of Marc Surer and Michele Alboreto .
run
René Arnoux initially took the lead from Nelson Piquet, Elio de Angelis, Andrea de Cesaris , Michele Alboreto and Derek Warwick . While de Angelis and Eddie Cheever were eliminated early due to technical problems, Keke Rosberg managed to get to second place by the 20th lap past Warwick, Alboreto, de Cesaris and Piquet.
When most of the competitors went to their pits for the now mandatory pit stop to refuel, Piquet and Alboreto fell by the wayside. As Arnoux retired on the 32nd lap due to an electrical fault, Piquet took the lead. John Watson , who, like Alboreto, wanted to finish the race at the front without stopping, was at this point in fourth place behind Keke Rosberg and in front of Jacques Laffite , who had both already made their stops. Thierry Boutsen took sixth place , but lost it to Nigel Mansell on lap 39 .
When Piquet had to go to the pits on the 51st lap due to a puncture, this resulted in the last shift within the leading group. He dropped to fourth place behind Alboreto, Rosberg and Watson.
Alboreto's win turned out to be the last for Tyrrell , although the team competed in the Formula 1 World Cup for another 15 years until 1998 .
