Reports
background
In the hope of finding a new main sponsor, Arrows brought the 1980 world champion , Alan Jones , back into Formula 1. Otherwise there were no changes on the driver's side compared to the season opener in Brazil two weeks earlier.
There were two major innovations in the vehicles. Lotus competed for the first time with a copy of the new 93T , which was powered by a Renault turbo engine. Elio de Angelis drove the car, while his teammate Nigel Mansell initially continued to use the tried and tested Lotus 92 with a conventional naturally aspirated engine. A similar strategy was followed with the Renault works team, in that the new RE40 was initially only driven by one of the two works drivers, namely Alain Prost , and Eddie Cheever was still equipped with the mature RE30B .
training
During the training sessions, it emerged that the Goodyear - and Pirelli - tire teams appeared to have significant advantages over the Michelin- tire competition that weekend . This was also reflected on the grid resist, resulting from the two Ferrari pilots Patrick Tambay and René Arnoux in the front row and from the two Williams of Keke Rosberg and Jacques Laffite composed. Behind them, Elio de Angelis and Derek Warwick, followed two vehicles on Pirelli tires in front of Michele Alboreto . In eighth place on the grid was Alain Prost, the first Michelin driver.
Both Osella pilots failed to qualify for one of the 26 starting positions.
run
While Tambay was defending his starting position, his team-mate Arnoux had to admit defeat to Rosberg, who had started from third place. He spun shortly afterwards, but was able to continue the race in third behind his team-mate Laffite. Arnoux meanwhile fell back to fifth place behind Alboreto. In the second lap, Rosberg came back in second place. When he tried to take the lead on lap 26, he collided with Tambay. This dropped out. Rosberg was able to continue the race again, but was rammed by Jean-Pierre Jarier shortly afterwards . As a result, Laffite took the lead in front of Riccardo Patrese and Marc Surer , while the two McLaren of Niki Lauda and John Watson , who had started the race from 22 and 23 on the grid, quickly caught up. This showed that the Michelin tires worked much better under racing conditions than they did in practice.
On lap 29, Elio de Angelis had to give up the race because the Lotus team had no more wheels after two complete tire changes.
On the 33rd lap, Watson passed Lauda. The duo overtook Patrese on lap 44 and Laffite one lap later. Thereupon they managed a double victory with a clear lead. It was the first for McLaren since the 1968 Canadian Grand Prix and the second for the team as a whole. Watson's victory after starting from 22nd place is a record that is still valid today (as of 2018).
In the 52nd lap Patrese was past Laffite in third place, but dropped out due to a technical defect during the final phase and was classified as tenth due to the distance he had covered. Laffite finished fourth behind Arnoux. Marc Surer and Johnny Cecotto came in fifth and sixth.
