The 1983 Belgian Grand Prix took place on May 22nd at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps near Spa and was the sixth race of the 1983 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
A week after the Monaco Grand Prix, the Belgian Grand Prix took place in Spa-Francorchamps for the first time since 1970 . The route had now been shortened by around half. In addition, significant modifications were made so that the then current safety requirements for a Formula 1 racetrack were met.
On the occasion of his home Grand Prix, the debutant Thierry Boutsen was signed as a new regular driver by the Arrows team . He replaced Chico Serra , who then ended his Formula 1 career. A key argument in favor of this change was that Boutsen brought urgently needed sponsorship money into the team.
training
On the course, which despite the significant shortening still only allowed lap times of over two minutes, even in dry conditions, Alain Prost , who was the leader in the World Championship, secured pole position with a lap time of around one hundredth of a second shorter than Patrick Tambay . Apart from these two, only third-placed Andrea de Cesaris achieved an average speed of over 200 km / h. Nelson Piquet qualified for fourth place on the grid ahead of René Arnoux and Riccardo Patrese .
Keke Rosberg achieved ninth place on the grid as the best of the pilots without a turbo engine.
As it was raining on Saturday during the second qualifying session, none of the drivers could beat the best time they set on Friday.
run
When the starter decided to abort the start due to an unclean field, his signal was misunderstood by some pilots, so they carried out a normal race start. At the end of the lap, the field repositioned itself and mechanics took the starting grid. After the misunderstanding was cleared up, the start was normal and Andrea de Cesaris took the lead ahead of Alain Prost, Patrick Tambay, Nelson Piquet and Manfred Winkelhock . After a few meters, Riccardo Patrese had to give up the race with an engine failure.
De Cesaris led the race until the 18th lap. Then most of the drivers made the now almost obligatory pit stops to refuel. Due to a comparatively long stop, de Cesaris lost the lead to Prost. For a short time Patrick Tambay, Nelson Piquet, Keke Rosberg and Eddie Cheever were also in front of him. However, when they also made their pit stops, de Cesaris returned to second place until he was eliminated on lap 26 after an engine failure.
Alain Prost won the race ahead of Patrick Tambay, Eddie Cheever, Nelson Piquet, Keke Rosberg and Jacques Laffite .
