Reports

background

A field of drivers that has only changed slightly since the last World Championship race competed in the Belgian Grand Prix on the then high-speed circuit of Spa-Francorchamps.

After five GP appearances in the previous year, Guy Ligier competed for the first time in the current season with his private Cooper T81 .

training

Two weeks after the victory of the first use Lotus 49 by Jim Clark at the Dutch Grand Prix was a little surprised the experts when Clark again the pole position with a lead of about three seconds ahead of Dan Gurney reached, the weekend before the 24 - Le Mans hour race . With Graham Hill , the second factory Lotus also reached the front row.

Ferrari driver Chris Amon shared the second row with Cooper factory driver Jochen Rindt . It was followed by Jackie Stewart , Jack Brabham and Mike Parkes .

Due to handling problems in the second Brabham factory, Denis Hulme only achieved 14th place on the grid.

run

While Jim Clark, one of the two Lotus works drivers, was able to convert the start from the front row into a lead, Graham Hill's second works car was initially unable to start due to a weak battery. Hill had to start the race from the pits. Since Gurney interconnected at the start, Rindt, Stewart and Parkes were initially the pursuers of the leading Clark.

Towards the end of the first lap, Parkes ran into an oil spill and had a serious accident on the fast Blanchimont corner. The leg injuries suffered in the process sealed the end of his racing career. As a test driver and engineer, however, he stayed with Ferrari for several years.

After Rindt fell back slightly, Stewart moved up to second place, followed by Amon and Gurney, who was increasingly catching up to the top.

After the twelfth lap, Clark and Gurney headed for the pits at the same time. Gurney did not stop, but merely informed his pit crew of an impending defect. He returned to the track in second place behind Stewart, 15 seconds behind. After a short repair, Clark returned to seventh place.

Towards the end of the race, Stewart started having gear shift problems. He had to hold the gearshift lever in its respective position and could therefore only steer with one hand. Gurney benefited from this handicap, taking the lead in the 21st round and ultimately winning by over a minute.

It was Gurney's fourth and final Grand Prix win and the only one of his own Eagle team.
