The 1989 Belgian Grand Prix took place on August 27 at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps near Spa and was the eleventh race of the 1989 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

At the same time as his Formula 1 involvement, which came about at relatively short notice before the French Grand Prix , Jean Alesi started in Formula 3000 . Since he had a good chance of winning the championship in this racing series, he decided to concentrate fully on this goal for the rest of the season and left his place at Tyrrell to Johnny Herbert, who was released at Benetton in the middle of the season .

Pierre-Henri Raphanel , who only qualified once (at the Monaco Grand Prix ), was replaced at Coloni by the newcomer Enrico Bertaggia . Raphanel then became the successor of the equally unsuccessful Volker Weidler at Rial Racing , who then ended his Formula 1 career without qualifying.

training

The two McLaren teammates and main competitors in the fight for the world title, Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost , qualified for the front row in front of Ferrari driver Gerhard Berger and the two Williams drivers Thierry Boutsen and Riccardo Patrese . Berger's team-mate Nigel Mansell followed in sixth place on the grid.

The two Lotus pilots Nelson Piquet and Satoru Nakajima failed to qualify, which highlighted the steadily worsening crisis of the traditional British team.

As it was raining during the first regular qualifying session on Friday, all participating drivers achieved their best lap times on Saturday.

run

Due to rain showers, the start was postponed by around half an hour. Nevertheless, the race took place in rainy conditions.

Senna took the lead ahead of Prost, Berger, Mansell, Boutsen and Patrese. Due to aquaplaning , Berger slipped out on the tenth lap. Mansell, who had already overtaken the two Williams started in front of him on the first lap, achieved third place. As a result, there were no further shifts in position on the podium. Thierry Boutsen finished fourth in front of Alessandro Nannini and Derek Warwick .
