Alessandro Giuseppe "Alex" Caffi (born March 18, 1964 in Rovato ) is an Italian racing car driver who competed in Formula 1 from 1986 to 1991 .

Career

Caffi initially started in Formula 3 , where he was victorious in the European Formula 3 Cup in 1985 . He then drove in Formula 1 from 1986 to 1991. He started his career with the Osella team, which he saved from financial ruin thanks to various sponsors. During his 56 appearances in Formula 1, a 4th place was his best result. He achieved this placement at the Monaco Grand Prix with the Scuderia Italia team in the 1989 season .

In 1992 Caffi was registered for the first race of the season for Andrea Moda Formula , but turned only a few test laps in South Africa before the first free practice in a Coloni C4B . After that, the team was excluded from the World Cup. When the team restarted a few weeks later, Caffi was no longer there: He had been replaced by Perry McCarthy , who had bought into the team with new sponsorship money . When Caffi attracted new sponsors a little later, team boss Andrea Sassetti wanted to replace McCarthy with Caffi again; however, the regulations did not allow another driver change. There was no other possibility for Caffi to stay in Formula 1.

Alex Caffi has been competing in the Nascar Whelen Euro Series with his own team since 2016.
