Reports
background
A new team called the Jolly Club appeared for the first time. The AGS JH21C , powered by a Motori Moderni turbo unit, was piloted by Ivan Capelli .
The Italian debutant Alex Caffi represented the Canadian Allen Berg at Osella . So eight Italians started their home race.
training
Just like three weeks earlier in Austria , Benetton driver Teo Fabi secured pole position. Alain Prost followed ahead of Nigel Mansell and Fabi's team-mate Gerhard Berger . The third row of the grid was formed by the two Brazilians Ayrton Senna and Nelson Piquet , who, along with Mansell and Prost, had realistic chances of winning the World Cup.
run
Before the start, both drivers who qualified for the front row had problems with their cars. While Fabi started the race from last place, Prost switched to a T-Car and started the race from the pit lane.
Berger took advantage of the fact that the front row was unoccupied to take the lead. He was followed by the two Williams pilots Mansell and Piquet. René Arnoux , Keke Rosberg and Michele Alboreto were fourth to sixth at this point.
On the seventh lap, Mansell took the lead. In the following round, Berger was relegated to fourth place by Piquet and Alboreto.
Within 18 laps, Prost fought his way up to sixth place. Then he was disqualified with the black flag because his switch to the T-Car was judged to be illegal by the officials. Even before he got to the pit, his engine failed. He couldn't have finished the race anyway.
A spin with a subsequent repair stop on the pits threw Alboreto out of the leading group. On the 38th lap, Piquet passed Mansell, gained a small lead and won, moving him to second place in the world championship. Behind Mansell, Stefan Johansson took third place in front of Keke Rosberg, Gerhard Berger and Alan Jones .
