The 1990 Italian Grand Prix took place in Monza on September 9th and was the twelfth race of the 1990 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

The field of participants was unchanged compared to the Belgian Grand Prix two weeks earlier.

training

Ayrton Senna qualified for the pole position ahead of his title rival Alain Prost and his team-mate Gerhard Berger . Prost's team-mate Nigel Mansell followed in front of Jean Alesi and the two Williams drivers Thierry Boutsen and Riccardo Patrese as well as the two Benetton team- mates Alessandro Nannini and Nelson Piquet .

run

While Senna took the lead before Berger, Alesi overtook Mansell's Ferrari before the first chicane and caught up with his team-mate Prost in the Curva Grande , whom he finally overtook in the braking zone of the second chicane after changing lanes several times.

As a result of a rollover by Derek Warwick in the Parabolica , the race was canceled at the end of the first lap. Warwick escaped unharmed and was able to participate in the restart in a replacement car.

After the race had started again, the same order was established during the first lap as after the first start, as Alesi managed the same maneuvers again against the same opponents at identical points. In the fifth lap, however, he turned off. At this point Senna and Berger had already clearly separated themselves from the rest of the field. By the 21st lap, however, Prost was able to catch up with Berger, as he was slowing down due to braking problems. After overtaking him, there were no further changes in position in the first four places.

Senna won ahead of Prost, Berger and Mansell. Riccardo Patrese and Satoru Nakajima took fifth and sixth after Thierry Boutsen had to retire due to a suspension damage and both Benetton drivers had fallen behind as a result of unsuccessful pit stops.
