run
Häkkinen was able to start very well and thus maintain the lead, while Frentzen had a bad start and slipped back to fourth behind Coulthard and Zanardi. After the first corner, Gené slams onto de la Rosa's front wheel and climbed up a little with his car. In the variant della Roggia , Gené had the same mishap again, only this time he had to give up after the collision with de la Rosa in the gravel. In the course of the first lap, Coulthard lost places again, while Frentzen was able to pass Zanardi. At the beginning of the second round, Häkkinen was leading ahead of Frentzen, Zanardi, Ralf Schumacher, Salo and Coulthard. In the first corner, Fisichella and Diniz flew independently of each other and had to give up the race. Fisichella braked a lot and had to move onto the grass to avoid a collision, but there he turned into the guardrail. Diniz, on the other hand, had to evade after he had overtaken Wurz and came onto the grass, where he turned like Fisichella.
Coulthard started now, Salo for fifth place, but Barrichello was able to accelerate better after the Parabolica and overtook Coulthard on lap ten before the first chicane. One lap later, Wurz, whose car was very poorly tuned, had to retire with a gearbox damage at the level of the target marking. On lap 18 Barrichello was able to pass Salo, seven laps later Barrichello was already in fourth place ahead of Zanardi, Salo and Coulthard. On lap 24, Takagi and Badoer fought for the penultimate place, before the chicane Takagi braked and drove into Badoer's car and briefly sat on the Minardi. Badoer had to give up the race, Takagi was able to continue for the time being until he spun out of the race on lap 35.
After the start of the 30th lap, Häkkinen turned while in the lead, as in San Marino , after a driving error into the gravel and had to give up the race. Immediately after the car came to a standstill, Häkkinen threw the steering wheel out of the car. Frentzen was now in the lead until he went to the pit lane on lap 36 and after a standing time of 7.6 seconds was able to resume the race in third behind Salo and Coulthard. Immediately afterwards Irvine pitted and completed his stop after just 6.9 seconds. The quick work of the mechanics brought Irvine to sixth ahead of Zanardi. Meanwhile, Salo was leading the Italian Grand Prix with Ferrari until he pitted on lap 37 with Coulthard, who finished second. Salo's standing time was again 6.9 seconds, Coulthard had problems refueling and could only continue after 7.6 seconds. After the only pit stops, Frentzen was leading ahead of Ralf Schumacher, Salo, Barrichello, Coulthard and Irvine in sixth place. In this constellation, the best six drivers stayed and thus Frentzen was able to win the race ahead of Ralf Schumacher and Mika Salo. The trophy for the winning designer Jordan took Eddie Jordan of Gianni Petrucci , president of the National Olympic Committee of Italy, contrary.
After the race
Fisichella's retired Benetton B199 was not brought into the paddock and therefore stayed with the circuit until the end. There, some fans gained unauthorized access to the car and tore off some body parts for "souvenirs".
