The 2013 Italian Grand Prix (officially Formula 1 Gran Premio d'Italia 2013 ) took place on September 8th at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Monza and was the twelfth race of the 2013 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
After the Belgian Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' championship with 46 points ahead of Fernando Alonso and 58 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton . Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship with 77 points ahead of Mercedes and 94 points ahead of Ferrari .
At the Italian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (orange) and P Zero Medium (white) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .
With Alonso, Vettel (twice each) and Hamilton, three former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
The race stewards were Garry Connelly (AUS), Paolo Longoni (ITA), Radovan Novak (CZE) and Danny Sullivan (USA).
training
In the first free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time ahead of Alonso and his team-mate Nico Rosberg . James Calado took part in a Formula 1 weekend for the first time and took over Force India from Adrian Sutil for this training session . In addition, Heikki Kovalainen took over the Caterham from Giedo van der Garde and Rodolfo González took over the Marussia from Jules Bianchi . In the second free practice session, Vettel dominated both the long runs and one lap. He took the lead over half a second ahead of his teammates Mark Webber and Kimi Raikkonen . Raikkonen achieved the same lap time as his team-mate Romain Grosjean . Both used different versions of the Lotus E21 . Grosjean used the same vehicle as at the previous Grand Prix, Raikkonen a version with an extended wheelbase.
Vettel also set the fastest time in the third free practice session. Alonso was second ahead of Webber. In contrast to the second free practice session, the gaps were smaller. The first 13 drivers were within a second. Due to a hydraulic defect, Rosberg only completed five laps and was last. Paul di Resta lost the rear of the Parabolica and hit the tire wall with the front of the vehicle.
Qualifying
In the first section of qualifying, Vettel drove the fastest lap. The Marussia and Caterham pilots as well as Valtteri Bottas and Esteban Gutiérrez were eliminated. In the second section, Vettel stayed in the lead. The Force India and Lotus pilots as well as Pastor Maldonado and Hamilton were eliminated. After qualifying it turned out that Hamilton had damaged his underbody with a driving error in the Ascari variant .
In the final segment, Vettel kept the first position and achieved the 40th pole position of his Formula 1 career ahead of his teammates Webber and Nico Hülkenberg . It was Red Bull Racing's 50th pole position. Ferrari tried to help Alonso with the help of his teammate Felipe Massa to a better starting position by donating Massa Alonso slipstream. However, Massa drove so fast that the tactic did not work. Massa finished fourth, Alonso fifth.
After qualifying, Sutil was given a starting place penalty of three positions by the stewards for obstructing Hamilton in the second part of the time practice.
run
With the exception of Hamilton, Raikkonen and Gutiérrez, all drivers started on the medium tire compound. Vettel started well and kept the lead. Webber also got off the grid well, but was overtaken by Massa in the first corner. Alonso was in fourth place ahead of Hulkenberg and Rosberg. Di Resta hit Grosjean when braking before the variant della Roggia and retired. Grosjean's vehicle was not badly damaged and he drove on. Grosjeans team mate Raikkonen damaged his front wing on the first lap when he came into contact with Sergio Pérez and came to the pits to stop for repairs. He switched to the medium tire compound so that he had already used both tire compounds at the beginning of the second lap.
While Vettel gained a slight lead at the top, Alonso passed Webber on the third lap. Five laps later, Alonso took over second position from his team-mate Massa. In the meantime, Raikkonen drove the fastest laps with the new tires, but was initially at the bottom of the field. Vettel continued to pull away and control the race, while Hamilton pitted on lap 14 to change his tires. He had a creeping flat tire and switched to the medium tires. A little later, Jean-Éric Vergne retired due to a technical defect.
On lap 24, both Red Bull drivers pitted and switched to the harder tires. Both stops went perfectly. After the race, Red Bull announced that Vettel had to deal with vibrations after a brake plate in the first stint. Webber came back on the track just before Raikkonen. Alonso took the lead, while Massa pitted a lap later and also switched to the hard mix. In doing so, he fell behind Webber. After the race, Massa criticized his team's tactics for not having called him into the pits beforehand. Four laps after Vettel, Alonso pitted and fell back to second place. He stayed ahead of Webber while Vettel took the lead back. Webber put Alonso under pressure for the remainder of the race, but never had the opportunity to overtake.
While Vettel controlled the race at the front and had a solid lead over Alonso, Hamilton overtook several drivers in midfield and moved up to fifth position. However, Hamilton - like Raikkonen and the Caterham pilots - pitted again and fell back into midfield. However, he benefited from the fresher tires and showed a few overtaking maneuvers by the end of the race. In addition, he drove the fastest race lap. Both Red Bull drivers had minor problems with their gearboxes in the final phase. One lap before the end of the race, Sutil gave up with braking problems.
Vettel finally won the race ahead of Alonso, Webber, Massa, Hülkenberg and Rosberg. The first six drivers were within ten seconds. Vettel achieved his 32nd Grand Prix victory, drawing level with Alonso. After this race, both finished fourth in the all-time list of the best Grand Prix winners. After this race, both drivers were together the most successful active Formula 1 drivers after victories. Webber was third on the podium for the first time in Italy. With fifth place, Hülkenberg scored more points than he and his team had taken in previous races of the season. The top 10 were completed by Daniel Ricciardo , Grosjean, Hamilton and Jenson Button , who had a larger gap. It was Red Bull Racing's 40th Formula 1 victory.
Vettel increased his lead in the drivers' world championship. The first three positions remained unchanged. Red Bull remained in the lead among the constructors, while Ferrari passed Mercedes into second place.
Comments from the first three drivers
“It's fantastic to win again at this event. I just made it through the first corner. I blocked the right front tire and it just didn't seem to grip anymore. I had a big brake flat that I felt immediately, and I wasn't sure the tire would hold out.
But luckily I made it into the corner and had a strong first leg. I immediately put pressure on to get a lead if we had to stop early and switch to a two-pit-stop strategy.
We had a gearbox problem and I had to do without traction-free shifting, which meant that we lost some time on the straights. But I tried to make up for that on the turns.
It's great to finish on the top tier. The podium here is always very passionate. We're in Italy, and if you walk around the track, you'll see Ferrari clothing and Ferrari fan merchandise in every shop, from the smallest size up. It's part of their DNA, which I understand. It was great for the Tifosi today to have Fernando on the podium.
The season is going well and we are putting a lot of pressure on, but we take every race as it comes. We're looking forward to the Singapore race, which I want to finish. I think it's the toughest race we have of the year. "
“It is always a special feeling to climb onto the Monza podium. Because it's the only one where you can feel all the love the fans have for the team, and it's the best price at the end of an almost perfect weekend. Almost because our rivals won the championship, and we send them our congratulations for that.
We were doing well on both Friday and Saturday, getting both cars in the top five, but Red Bull was able to do better. When Vettel pitted, we were still driving green sector times, and that's why we decided to drag out the race as long as possible, as long as Webber didn't pose a threat.
We could have tried to grab Vettel on the hard tires that were a few laps better. We did our best and even if we are realistic about our championship chances and catching up 53 points in the remaining few races is not an easy matter, anything can happen in Formula 1 and we will keep going Believe our chances until we cross the finish line in Brazil and we will always try everything. "
“This is a great place and it's very special to finish on the podium. It's not the track I've had the best results on in the past, so it's a personal best for me in qualifying and in the race.
It felt better on the soft tires today. I had a good fight with Fernando, FairPlay to him on this, and after that I settled down and went on with the race. We grabbed Felipe at the stop which was great. I was happy with my lap into the pits, the pit stop was great, and my lap out of the pits was also strong, so we easily got ahead of him.
In the end, I had to take care of the transmission a little, but all in all it was a good result. Sebastian is very strong here and it was great that we achieved such a great result today. "
