Reports
background
After the Belgian Grand Prix , Jenson Button led the drivers' standings with 16 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello and 19 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel . Brawn- Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 23.5 points ahead of Red Bull- Renault and with 72 points ahead of Ferrari .
At Ferrari, Luca Badoer was replaced by Giancarlo Fisichella after two unsuccessful races . At Force India, this was replaced by the previous substitute driver Vitantonio Liuzzi , who last drove in a Formula 1 race in 2007 .
For the first time since the Bahrain Grand Prix , Renault used KERS again . Together with McLaren and Ferrari, six cars started with this system.
With Barrichello (twice), Fernando Alonso and Vettel (once each), three former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
training
The fastest lap in the first free practice was achieved by McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton in front of his team-mates Heikki Kovalainen and Adrian Sutil . In the second free practice session, Force India driver Sutil took the lead. The second and third places went to Renault drivers Romain Grosjean and Fernando Alonso . On Saturday Sutil set the fastest time again in the third free practice. In the seats behind him were Button and Nick Heidfeld .
Qualifying
In the first section of qualifying, Ferrari driver Kimi Räikkönen set the fastest lap ahead of Hamilton and Button. The Toro Rosso and Williams drivers and Timo Glock were eliminated. In the second qualifying period Button led the field ahead of Hamilton and Barrichello. Fisichella, Grosjean, Trulli and the BMW Sauber pilots, who both had an engine failure, were eliminated. In the third section, in which the pole position was awarded, World Champion Hamilton took the lead in front of Sutil and Raikkonen. After the start weights were announced, it became clear that the three leaders were the lightest pilots in the field.
run
Kimi Raikkonen, whose Ferrari had KERS, got off to a good start at the Italian Grand Prix. Since he went off the track briefly, he was unable to overtake Hamilton, who started from pole position. He passed Sutil, however. Kovalainen started less well and was overtaken by the two Brawns early on. In the variant della Roggia , Robert Kubica touched Mark Webber's Red Bull with his front wing : While Kubica was able to continue for the time being, Webber had to finish the race on the first lap. In the first few laps there were a few duels on the track. While Hamilton was able to drive away from the front, his teammate Kovalainen was also overtaken by Liuzzi and Alonso, who had previously driven past Vettel.
Vettel was also overtaken by Kubica, but did not have to stay behind him for long because the Pole saw the black and orange flag, which ordered a repair stop, and had to go into the pits because of a defective front wing. Raikkonen could not keep up with Hamilton's pace, but stayed ahead of Sutil's Force India, which could keep up with the Ferrari. Sutil's team-mate Liuzzi, who, in contrast to Sutil, relied on a one-stop strategy, was sixth up front and kept Alonso behind.
As expected, Hamilton was the first to make his regular pit stop and had to hand over the lead to Raikkonen. A short time later, Kubica had to give up the race due to an oil leak. After Raikkonen was also on the pits, the Brawns were in the lead, led by Barrichello. Raikkonen, who later stopped as Sutil, stayed ahead of the German after the pit stop and came back on track between Liuzzi and Alonso.
After the drivers made their first pit stop using a two-stop strategy, Toro Rosso driver Jaime Alguersuari retired with transmission problems. The Brawn drivers dictated the pace at the front and extended their lead over Hamilton and the other pursuers. In the 23rd, local hero Liuzzi also had to retire due to transmission problems. Nevertheless, Liuzzi convinced on his return after almost two years as a test driver.
After Button and Barrichello had completed their only stop, Hamilton was again in the lead ahead of Raikkonen and Sutil. The McLaren driver tried with fast laps to extend his lead over the Brawns, who were using a different strategy. However, his lead was not enough at his second stop and he came back on track behind Barrichello and Button. Raikkonen, who has now taken the lead again, pitted on the same lap as Sutil, who was within striking distance of the Finn. While Raikkonen had problems driving off, Sutil stopped too late. Both lost about the same amount of time and so Raikkonen stayed ahead of Sutil. Barrichello took the lead again.
At the end of the race, the Toyota drivers who were outside the top ten ensured internal duels, in which Glock finally prevailed. Hamilton also continued to put pressure on the Brawn drivers in front of him and caught up with Button. On the last lap, Hamilton flew between the Lesmo curves and triggered a safety car phase. Barrichello only had to drive his car to the finish and won the race ahead of his teammate Button. Third place went to Raikkonen, who was able to keep Sutil behind him until the end. The German achieved his best result in Formula 1 in fourth. The other points went to Alonso, Kovalainen, Heidfeld and Vettel. The Red Bull drivers were the big losers of the weekend as Button and Barrichello were able to extend their lead over them.
