Reports

background

After the German Grand Prix , Jenson Button led the drivers' standings with 21 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel and 22.5 points ahead of Mark Webber . Brawn- Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 19.5 points ahead of Red Bull- Renault and with 77.5 points ahead of Toyota .

At Toro Rosso , Sébastien Bourdais was replaced by Jaime Alguersuari . By starting at the age of 19 years and 125 days, Alguersuari became the youngest Formula 1 driver to date, breaking the almost 29-year- old record of Mike Thackwell , who was 19 years and 154 days old at his debut race .

Robert Kubica contested his 50th Grand Prix at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

With Rubens Barrichello , Fernando Alonso , Kimi Raikkonen , Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen (one each), six former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

training

In the first free practice, McLaren driver Heikki Kovalainen posted the best time ahead of Nico Rosberg and his teammate Lewis Hamilton. In the second free practice session, Hamilton confirmed his team's good performance and set the fastest time ahead of Kovalainen and Rosberg. In the third free practice session, Hamilton was again the fastest driver. Heidfeld and Rosberg followed in second and third place . Thus, in every section of the training, a McLaren driver was in first position.

Qualifying

In the first part of the qualification, Rosberg set the fastest time. Both BMW Sauber and Force India pilots and debutant Alguersuari were eliminated. Alguersuari retired with a hydraulic defect before the time ran out.

In the second section, Webber achieved the fastest time of the entire race weekend with 1: 20.358. After the time had elapsed, Felipe Massa had a serious accident when an 800 gram metal spring that had detached from Rubens Barrichello's Brawn , which was driving four seconds, out of sight in front of him , jumped on the road at 240 km / h on his helmet met. He was briefly passed out and drove head-on into the tire wall. Massa suffered a severe concussion. In addition, a cranial bone fragment had to be surgically removed from his left eye socket. The Toyota drivers, Buemi , Barrichello and Piquet were eliminated. Massa qualified for the third training session and would have started from tenth place on the grid since he could no longer participate. After it became clear that Massa would not be ready for the race, the race management decided to let the following drivers move up one place each.

In the third part of the qualifying, the timing of the manufacturer LG Electronics failed due to a damaged cable. So the drivers were initially at a loss as to who would start the race from pole position . Fernando Alonso finally achieved pole position with a time of 1: 21.569 minutes ahead of the two Red Bull-Renaults of Vettel and Webber. It was Renault's first pole position since the 2006 Chinese Grand Prix .

run

Fernando Alonso on three wheels

At the start, Alonso maintained the top position ahead of Webber, Hamilton, Raikkonen and Vettel. Raikkonen, who made up some positions with the help of KERS , collided slightly with Vettel in the first corner, who then lost a few positions. Adrian Sutil finished his race in the pit lane after just one lap . A little later, Hamilton overtook Webber after the first corner, in which the McLaren driver used KERS, and put pressure on the leading Alonso.

The Spaniard, who started with little fuel, had to make an early pit stop. A momentous mishap happened to his pit crew: His right front wheel was not properly attached and a little later came off Alonso's Renault. Fortunately, nobody was hit by the wheel flying through the air. After an emergency stop, Alonso gave up in the pit lane a little later. Renault was banned from the next race after the end of the race. As an appeal was made, the team was allowed to compete in the European Grand Prix .

A little later, Webber and Raikkonen came to the pits at the same time. After Webber's pit stop was not without problems, he left too early and almost collided with Raikkonen. After all drivers had completed their stops, Hamilton led the race ahead of Raikkonen and Webber. Webber's team-mate Vettel later fell out with suspension damage that occurred during the start-up collision with Raikkonen.

Without further incident, Hamilton won the Hungarian Grand Prix ahead of Raikkonen and Webber. Hamilton achieved the first victory of a racing car with KERS , which was also the first victory of the world champion this season. Raikkonen, who also had KERS, also achieved his best placement with second place. With his third place, Webber was able to shorten his deficit on the championship leader Button, who was seventh, and also took second place in the drivers' standings.
