The 1989 Hungarian Grand Prix took place on August 13th at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród near Budapest and was the tenth race of the 1989 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

The same drivers competed who had contested the German Grand Prix for two weeks.

training

Because Williams driver Riccardo Patrese was the only one to achieve a lap time of less than 1:20 minutes and was thus faster than Ayrton Senna , for the first time in the 1989 season one of the two McLaren drivers was not on pole position. For third place on the grid, Alex Caffi surprisingly qualified ahead of Thierry Boutsen , Alain Prost and Gerhard Berger .

run

Patrese was initially able to defend his top position against Senna. Caffi also held his third position until the fourth lap, but then fell behind Berger and four laps later behind Prost, as the Pirelli tires were very well suited for individual fast laps in qualifying, but exhibited weaknesses in the race.

Nigel Mansell , who started from twelfth place, made up a few positions and achieved third place on lap 41. When Patrese was eliminated on lap 53 due to a radiator failure, Mansell was in second place behind Senna. Just at the moment when the two ran up against Stefan Johansson , who had to be lapped, the latter suddenly slowed down due to transmission problems. Senna reacted quickly, but lost some speed, which Mansell took advantage of to pull past. The Briton finally achieved his second win of the season. Ayrton Senna finished second ahead of Thierry Boutsen, Alain Prost, Eddie Cheever and Nelson Piquet .
