The 1989 Brazilian Grand Prix took place on March 26th in Rio de Janeiro and was the first race of the 1989 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

With the new season, a ban on turbo engines that had already been announced before the start of the preseason came into force. In addition, Pirelli, a rival for Goodyear , returned to Formula 1 as a tire supplier. The British racing team Onyx entered as a new team. Some teams changed their engine partners. Eight as well as ten and twelve cylinder engines were used. In particular, the manufacturers Ford-Cosworth and Judd were chosen as outfitters by numerous teams. Yamaha and Lamborghini appeared as new suppliers .

In addition to the world champion team McLaren , Arrows , Lotus , March , Minardi and Larrousse retained the driver line-ups with which they had ended the 1988 season.

Nigel Mansell moved from Williams , where he was replaced by Thierry Boutsen , to Ferrari . There he ousted Michele Alboreto , who then took the former place of Julian Bailey at Tyrrell . Boutsen's cockpit at Benetton was occupied by the newcomer Johnny Herbert . In addition to this, the five other debutants Bertrand Gachot for Onyx, Gregor Foitek for EuroBrun , Olivier Grouillard for Ligier , Volker Weidler for Rial and Joachim Winkelhock for AGS were announced at the start of the season.

Team Brabham , which has since been sold by Bernie Ecclestone , returned to the field after a year break with drivers Martin Brundle and Stefano Modena . With the exception of EuroBrun and AGS, all teams competed with two cars.

Numerous teams started the season with updated vehicles from the previous year.

training

In the course of test drives prior to the training, Philippe Streiff had a serious accident . He suffered from paraplegia, which ended his Formula 1 career.

Since a total of 38 drivers lined up to qualify for one of the 26 starting positions, a pre-qualification was carried out regularly, as in the previous year. 13 pilots had to take part, both drivers from Brabham, Osella , Zakspeed and Onyx as well as one driver each from Rial, EuroBrun, Larrousse, Coloni and AGS. The five fastest among them received clearance to take part in the two regular qualification rounds.

During the test drives in winter it had already become apparent that McLaren would still be the team to beat even after switching from turbo to naturally aspirated engines. Accordingly, the experts were not surprised when the reigning world champion Ayrton Senna achieved pole position, which he had achieved 13 times on 16 race weekends last year. Riccardo Patrese , Gerhard Berger and Thierry Boutsen qualified for the places behind. Alain Prost and Nigel Mansell formed the third row ahead of Ivan Capelli and Derek Warwick .

run

On the very hot day of the race, Patrese and Berger, whose Ferrari was equipped with a semi-automatic transmission for the first time, were able to catch up to the first corner on Senna, who had started poorly. Berger and Senna collided, whereupon Patrese took the lead. His team-mate Boutsen followed in second place in front of Mansell, Prost, Capelli and Warwick.

Mansell passed Boutsen on the third lap, who was eliminated shortly afterwards. In lap 15, the Brit took the lead after a strong maneuver against Patrese. He won ahead of Alain Prost and Maurício Gugelmin . For the Brazilian, this was the only podium finish in his Formula 1 career. Fourth was the impressive newcomer Johnny Herbert, ahead of Derek Warwick and Alessandro Nannini . Nicola Larini was disqualified after driving ten laps because of misconduct at the start.

The Ferrari victory came as a surprise, also for the team itself, which had to contend with a lack of reliability during tests in the run-up to the season. Ferrari's race director had even suggested to Mansell to start the race with a half-full tank in order to appear competitive at least until the expected failure due to the lower weight compared to the competition.
