Jonathan Charles Palmer (born November 7, 1956 in London ) is an entrepreneur and former British racing driver . He is the father of racing driver Jolyon Palmer .
Career
After graduating from Brighton College and completing his PhD , Dr. Jonathan Palmer first worked as a doctor in London. Around the same time he got into motorsport. He won the 1981 British Formula 3 Championship and in 1983 the European Championship in the Formula 2 in addition to Mike Thackwell in a team with a Ralt - Honda .
Between 1983 and 1989 he was named for a total of 88 races in Formula 1 , but failed to qualify in four races and did not take part in the 1985 San Marino Grand Prix. He achieved 14 World Championship points and the best place was 4th. In 1985 he moved from RAM to Zakspeed . He drove his last Formula 1 race in Japan in 1989 . After that he contested several rallycross races with a Ford RS200 .
After his racing career, he worked from mid-1993 for a few years at the BBC as a television commentator, where he replaced the recently deceased James Hunt .
In 1998, Palmer founded the Formula Palmer Audi racing series , also known as Palmer Audi or FPA , in which monoposto vehicles with 1.8 liter turbo engines from Audi and an output of around 300 hp are used. Most testers FPA -Eleve is the former Formula 1 and Champ Car -Pilot Justin Wilson , as well as driver Gary Paffett and Andy Priaulx collected in this series experience.
MotorSport Vision, a Palmer-led company, now owns and operates a number of UK circuits including Brands Hatch , Snetterton Circuit , Cadwell Park , Oulton Park and the Bedford Autodrome .
