Mexico City 430 km race in 1991

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 430 km race of Mexico City 1991 , also FIA SWC - Trofeo Mexico, Hermanos Rodriguez , took place on October 6th at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez and was the seventh round of the sports car world championship of that year.

The race

After the success at the 430 km race in Magny-Cours , the Peugeot team, led by Jean Todt, also showed its strongest side at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. With the debut of the new emergency car in the 430 km race at the Nürburgring , Peugeot was fully competitive again. In all four training parts, the warm-up and in the race, the Peugeot 905 Evo 1 Bis were the fastest vehicles. The double victory was the logical consequence of this superiority. In the drivers' world championship, Derek Warwick was able to catch up points on his Jaguar team- mate Teo Fabi with a sixth place overall . After engine failure on the Jaguar XJR-14 just before the start, Fabi was unable to take part in the race.

The Mexico City route has also hosted the Mexican Grand Prix since 1986 . Since some drivers from the field of participants in the 430 km race also had Formula 1 experience and the engine regulations of Group C have been identical to those of Formula 1 since 1989, the lap times of the Group C racing cars can be directly compared with them of contemporary Formula 1 vehicles.

In qualifying for the 430 km race, Philippe Alliot , Yannick Dalmas and Pascal Fabre each achieved faster lap times than in any of their Formula 1 races. In the qualifications for Formula 1 races in Mexico, however, Keke Rosberg , Derek Warwick , Bernd Schneider , David Brabham , Oscar Larrauri , Teo Fabi and Stefan Johansson were faster than in this sports car race . Likewise, Karl Wendlinger and Michael Schumacher , who only made their Formula 1 debut on this track at the 1992 Mexican Grand Prix , achieved faster lap times that year than in 1991 with their Sauber-Mercedes.
