Franz Konrad (born June 8, 1951 in Graz ) is an Austrian racing car driver with a German driver's license.

Career

Franz Konrad was born in Austria and is also an Austrian citizen, but always drove with a German license and is therefore a German motor sportsman according to the FIA ​​statutes.

Konrad began his career in the German Formula 3 championship in 1980, the overall winner of which he was in 1983. Parallel to Formula 3 (he went from 1980 to 1985 again racing in this formula), he drove from 1980 to 1982 in the European Formula 2 Championship on a March - BMW , but not as successful as in the formula. 3

Konrad has been successfully driving sports car races since 1978 and founded his own team, Konrad Motorsport , which is based in the Sürenheide district of Verl (North Rhine-Westphalia). He started 17 times in the 24 Hours of Le Mans . He drove in the Interseries , the ADAC GT Cup, the BPR Series, the Spanish GT Championship, the FIA GT Championship and the ALMS . His greatest success as a driver was winning the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in a Porsche 911 Carrera in 1993 , and in 1990 he finished 2nd in the 24 Hours of Le Mans together with Jan Lammers and Andy Wallace in a Jaguar XJR 12 . For almost his entire career he drove sports car races in Porsche vehicles . In 2001 he moved to Saleen . His team was the first to use these US vehicles in Europe.

In 2006 he returned to Porsche on an international level and fielded a Porsche 996 GT3 RSR in the 24-hour races in Bahrain and Dubai . In 2007 he returned to the Nordschleife after a long time and started with a new Porsche 997 GT3 RSR at the Nürburgring 24 Hours. However, the team dropped out after an accident on the first lap.

In the 2010s, Konrad increasingly competed in sports car races in North America.
