Oliver Benjamin Gavin (born September 29, 1972 in Huntingdon ) is a British automobile racing driver .
Career
Monoposto
Oliver Gavin, who like many other racing drivers started his career in karting , celebrated some successes in the monoposto , but is best known as a sports car driver. In 1990 he won the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award. In 1995 the professional world first noticed him when he won the British Formula 3 Championship . He drove in 1996 in the ITC and later in Formula 3000 and was a test driver for the Pacific Formula 1 team for a while . Before Bernd Mayländer became involved , he drove the Formula 1 Safety Car from 1997 (since the Silverstone Grand Prix) to 1999 .
Sports car
Oliver Gavin is currently working for Chevrolet in the USCC (formerly ALMS ). He has competed 13 times at the 24 Hours of Le Mans since 2001. He made his debut in this 24-hour race in 2001 at the wheel of a Saleen S7R , together with the Austrian Franz Konrad , who drives with a German license, and the American Terry Borcheller ; the trio reached the 26th place overall.
Gavin has been a works driver at Corvette Racing since 2002 and has been at the start at Le Mans on various GT racing car models of the Chevrolet Corvette ever since . In 2004, 2005 and 2006 he won the LM-GT1 class together with Olivier Beretta from Monegas and Jan Magnussen from Denmark . In 2006 he was fourth overall; only two Audi R10 TDIs and the Pescarolo C60 used by Henri Pescarolo were faster than the Corvette team at the time.
By the end of the 2016 season, the Briton had celebrated 3 overall and 49 class wins in GT and sports car races. This makes him one of the most successful GT drivers in motorsport history.
