Sebring 12 hour race 2006
The 54th Sebring 12 Hours of Sebring , also The 54th Annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, Sebring International Raceway , took place on March 18, 2006 at the Sebring International Raceway and was the first race of the 2006 ALMS season .
Before the race
As in the previous year, a Champion Racing Audi R8 secured the overall standings in the American Le Mans Series in 2005 . Frank Biela and Emanuele Pirro won the drivers' championship .
The race
In 2006 the successful Audi R8 was replaced by the Audi R10 TDI . The racing car presented in Paris at the end of 2005 was powered by a newly developed 5.5-liter twelve-cylinder TDI engine with twin-turbo charging. With over 475 kW and 1200 Newton meters, the Le Mans prototype surpassed the performance data of its predecessor. The R10's V12 engine, equipped with two particle filters, was hardly noticeable from the outside as a diesel engine due to its smoothness. The maximum torque of 1.2 kilonewton meters places special demands on the power transmission of the R10. Even the Audi Sport engine test stands had to be converted to other transmissions in order to cope with these high torque loads.
The chassis of the car also had to be adapted: the R10 TDI has a significantly longer wheelbase than the R8. So far, the particularly wide front tires have been unique for a Le Mans prototype. New techniques were also in the development of the monocoque made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic used. Chassis, engine and transmission form a torsion-resistant, fully load-bearing unit. The R10 TDI made its racing debut at Sebring.
The second racing car that made its debut at Sebring was the Porsche RS Spyder . The RS Spyder was known internally at Porsche as Type 9R6 and was the first completely new development since the 911 GT1 exclusively designed for motorsport . The chassis was a two-seater monocoque which, together with the flange-mounted engine and transmission unit, functioned as a load-bearing part of the vehicle . The RS Spyder had an approx. 3.4 liter (3397 cm³) large 90-degree V8 - naturally aspirated engine , which, according to the LMP2 regulations, had an air flow limiter measuring 44 mm in diameter to a maximum output of 353 kW (480 hp) at 10,300 / min was slowed down. Its output per liter was 103.62 kW (140.88 hp). The high-performance engine, known internally as type MR6 , achieved its maximum torque of 370 Nm at a speed of 7500 rpm. The intake system was equipped with individual throttle valves. The opening times of the 4 valves per cylinder were controlled by 2 overhead camshafts ( dohc ). The oil supply was ensured via dry sump lubrication including an oil-water heat exchanger . The exhaust gases escaped through an open manifold .
The debut of the two new LMP prototypes was not continuous. Frank Biels, Marco Werner and Emanuele Prior's Audi R10 TDI broke down early due to an overheated engine. The second works car, driven by Rinaldo Capello , Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish , won the race. However, the competition in the LMP1 class and thus for the overall victory was extremely thin and consisted of the two Dyson Racing Lola B06 / 10 and the Highcrof Racing or. Autocon Motorsports- MG-Lola EX257 , which were clearly inferior to the R10 TDI. The two RS Spyders did not see the checkered flag either after technical defects.
With Liz Halliday , driver in the overall runner-up Lola B05 / 40 from Intersport Racing, a woman stood on the podium for the first time in the history of Sebring.
