Sebring 12-hour race in 1967
The 16th 12 Hours of Sebring also 12 Hours of Endurance For The Alitalia Airlines Trophy, Sebring , found on April 1, 1967, the Sebring International Raceway place and was the second championship round of the World Sportscar Championship this year.
The race
The two tragic accidents in the 1966 race , in which five people died, called the racing event into question. The demand for better security precautions, which Alec Ulmann had consistently ignored for years , caused severe criticism of himself and the entire event after 1966. Ulmann tried to downplay the accidents and wanted to move the race to a street circuit in West Palm Beach . Preliminary contracts had already been signed, but the relocation did not take place. It was only after this failure that improvements to the route began, a new route with new run-off zones was provided. In addition, old buildings on the airport premises were dragged, some of which were dangerously close to the route.
The 1967 sports car world championship began in early February with the Daytona 24-hour race and a one-two-three for Ferrari . Behind the two Scuderia - 330P4s from Bandini / Amon and Parkes / Scarfiotti , the North American Racing - 412P from Pedro Rodríguez and Jean Guichet came in third overall. Scuderia decided not to go to Sebring to prepare for the European races. Unofficially, however, it was leaked that Enzo Ferrari feared further incidents and thus bad press after the accidents in the previous year.
After the withdrawal of Ferrari were plant - Ford GT40 despite the presence of Porsche without real opponents, although the Porsche 910 by Scooter Patrick of Gerhard Mitter third in the same lap as the second placed Ford of AJ Foyt and Lloyd Ruby came to the finish. Bruce McLaren and Mario Andretti crossed the finish line as winners with a lead of twelve laps .
