1986 Sebring 12 hour race

The 34th Sebring 12-hour race , also the 34th Running Coca-Cola Classic 12 Hours of Sebring, Sebring International Raceway , took place on March 22, 1986 at the Sebring International Raceway and was the third round of the IMSA GTP series this year.
The race
The 1986 IMSA GTP series began on February 2 with the Daytona 24-hour race . In 1986 Al Holbert , Derek Bell and Al Unser junior won there in a Porsche 962 . In the second round of the season, the 3-hour race in Miami , which took place three weeks before Sebring, Bob Wollek and Paolo Barilla , who also drove a Porsche 962, won.
In 1986 the race was held for the last time on the former runway of the Sebring Regional Airport . The airport was built in 1940 as Hendricks Army Airfield , where the United States Army Air Corps performed test flights with the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress . The north-south runway was part of the racetrack for four decades. The long, bumpy straight ensured Sebring's high average speeds, which peaked in 1986. In qualifying the Americans drove Whitney whole on a Hawk-March 85G with V6 - Buick - turbo engine a time of 2: 11.416 minutes. The average speed over one lap was 214.258 km / h. The appearance of the new BMW GTP , with great factory support from BMW in Germany, turned into a disaster. Three cars were registered. One burned out completely during training after an electrical defect. In the second GTP prototype, Bobby Rahal had a spectacular accident when the car got underpuff, took off, came up on the side and then rolled over several times. Rahal was completely uninjured, but the car was destroyed. As a result, BMW North America withdrew the third racing car. Like so many other Sebring events before that, the race ended spectacularly. The Porsche 962 driven by Bob Akin , Hans-Joachim Stuck and Jo Gartner lost a bike on the last lap and ended up on Victory Lane as a three-wheeler.
For Gartner, the victory at Sebring was his greatest success in international motorsport. A few months later, he had a fatal accident at the Le Mans 24-hour race .
