Career as a driver
Carlo Facetti's long career in motorsport spanned nearly four decades. When he started at the Targa Florio in April 1961 , it was not foreseeable that he would still race in the Italian GT championship in 1995. Facetti - who was a works driver at Alfa Romeo and Autodelta for many years , achieved his successes primarily in GT and sports car racing . Starts in monoposto racing cars remained a rarity. Nevertheless, he once tried to qualify for a Formula 1 world championship run. 1974 which reported Scuderia Finotto for him a Brabham BT42 for the Italian Grand Prix in Monza . With a training time of 1: 37.300 minutes, he narrowly failed to qualify for the race.
In the early 1960s, he primarily competed in touring car races with Alfa Romeo vehicles . He celebrated his first victory in 1962 at a national GT race in Monza. By the end of the 1960s he competed in all major international sports car races, made his debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and rose to become one of the most famous European touring car drivers. The third place overall in the 1970 Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour race in an Alfa Romeo 2000 GTam with partner Teodoro Zeccoli is particularly noteworthy . In 1964 he had also achieved third place overall in this race.
As a works driver for Autodelta, he made it onto the top three podium four times in 1974 in the World Sports Car Championship . At the 1000 km race in Zeltweg , he and Andrea de Adamich finished second overall in an Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 . In 1979 he secured the overall ranking in the European Touring Car Championship .
In the mid-1980s he became a works driver at Alba Engineering and won the junior C2 class of the sports car world championship for the small Italian team in 1983 and 1984.
CARMA
Facetti had a long-standing friendship with the industrialist Martino Finotto . At the beginning of the 1980s they jointly founded a company - CARMA (CAR for Carlo and MA for Martino) - which dealt with the development of racing engines. The 1.8-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine in the Alba AR2 - known as the Giannini Carma for regulatory reasons - was developed by CARMA.
