The fifth 1000 km race of Monza , also 1000 km di Monza, Autodromo Nazionale di Monza , took place on April 25, 1966 at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza and was the third race of the sports car world championship of that year.

The race

The race in Monza was the third round of the sports car world championship in 1966 . The season opener in Daytona was won by Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby in a Ford GT40 Mk.II used by Carroll Shelby . Miles and Ruby also remained successful in the Sebring International Raceway , the second race. This time they drove an X1 Roadster, a GT40 with a hardtop roof.

The Matra MS620 made its racing debut in Monza . The MS620 was the first Matra sports car prototype; It was driven by Johnny Servoz-Gavin and Jean-Pierre Jaussaud . Ferrari used the new 330P3 for the second time . John Surtees , who had a serious accident during a test drive with the Lola T70 at the end of 1965 , made his comeback in the racing cockpit. Even when he was in Formula 1 , Surtees repeatedly had problems with Ferrari racing director Eugenio Dragoni . As soon as he was back, the difficulties began again. Dragoni put Surtees in the car with Mike Parkes , who didn't like Surtees, which led to tension in the team.

In Monza, the entire circuit including the banked curves was driven. In the pouring rain prevailed despite all disagreements Surtees and Parkes before the two Ford GT40 of Masten Gregory / John Whitmore and Herbert Müller / Willy Mairesse .
