Spa-Francorchamps 1000 km race in 1966

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The first 1000 km race of Spa-Francorchamps , also Grand Prix de Spa, Circuit National de Francorchamps , took place on May 22, 1966 at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps and was the fifth round of the sports car world championship of that year.

Before the race

In 1966, in addition to the Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour race that had been held since 1924 , a second endurance race for sports cars established itself on the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps . A 500 km race has been held since 1963; but this was primarily reserved for GT vehicles . The races on the 14 km track were among the fastest sports car races in motorsport history. In 1966 it took the winners Mike Parkes and Ludovico Scarfiotti 4: 43: 24,000 hours on their Ferrari 330P3 to cover 1001.100 km. That corresponded to an average of 211.948 km / h. For comparison, the overall winners of the 1000 km race on the Nürburgring , Joakim Bonnier and Phil Hill on a Chaparral 2D , needed 6: 58: 47.600 hours for the 1000 km distance. The winning team was also slower at Le Mans . Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon in the Ford GT40 had a winning average of 201.795 km / h.

How quickly sports cars were moved in the 1960s is also shown by a comparison with Formula 1 of that time. At the Belgian Grand Prix in 1966 , John Surtees achieved a time of 3: 38,000 in training on a Ferrari 312/66 , which corresponded to an average of 232.844 km / h. In practice for the 1000 km race, Mike Parkes was only about nine seconds slower with a time of 3: 47.400.

The race

The race brought a victory for Scuderia Ferrari by Parkes and Scarfiotti ahead of the two Ford GT40 teams John Whitmore / Frank Gardner and Peter Revson / Skip Scott . There was a total failure for Porsche . After losing a Porsche 906 in an accident during training, the two remaining works cars also dropped out in the race.
