Porsche 917K, winning car from Pedro Rodríguez and Jackie Oliver

The sixth 1000 km race of Spa-Francorchamps , also Grand Prix de Spa (1000 kms de Francorchamps), Circuit National de Francorchamps , took place on May 9, 1971 at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps and was the sixth race of the sports cars World Championship this year.

The race

The 1000 km race in Spa was the sixth race of the season in 1971 and the fast track in the Belgian Ardennes demonstrated the superiority of sports cars with 5-liter engines over prototypes with 3-liter units. From start to finish, the two Wyer- Porsche 917K of Pedro Rodríguez / Jackie Oliver and Jo Siffert / Derek Bell fought a bitter duel for overall victory. With one lap to go, the two Porsches - Oliver and Bell at the wheel - were separated by just one second. A pit signal from Wyer race director David Yorke - ROD SIF (for the order Rodríguez Siffert) - ended the duel. The two Wyer then crossed the finish line almost simultaneously.

Third place went to Henri Pescarolo and Andrea de Adamich in their Alfa Romeo T33 / 3, four laps behind. The long traveling in the third place Ferrari 312PB of Jacky Ickx and Clay Regazzoni fell after a collision in the event of rounds (at the wheel sat Regazzoni) from.
