1000 km race on the Nürburgring in 1971
The 17th 1000 km race on the Nürburgring , also ADAC 1000 km race and Formula Super-Vau race Nürburgring, Nürburgring Nordschleife , took place on May 30, 1971 on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring and was the eighth round of the sports car world championship this year.
Before the race
World Championship
The 1971 World Sports Car Championship began on January 19 with the 1000 km race in Buenos Aires . The race, which ended with the overall victory of Jo Siffert and Derek Bell in the Porsche 917K , was overshadowed by Ignazio Giunti's fatal accident in the Ferrari 312PB . This was followed by the two endurance races in North America, the Daytona 24-hour race and the Sebring 12-hour race . At the end of January, Pedro Rodríguez and Jackie Oliver won the Daytona International Speedway in their Porsche 917K. It was the second overall win for John Wyer's team that year. Also on the Sebring International Raceway won a Porsche 917. This time remained Vic Elford and Gerard Larrousse for Martini & Rossi team of Hans-Dieter Dechent successful.
In the 1000 km race at Brands Hatch , Andrea de Adamich and Henri Pescarolo in the T33 / 3-71 achieved the first overall victory for an Alfa Romeo in the history of the World Sports Car Championship. Races five, the 1000 km race in Monza , and six, the 1000 km race in Spa-Francorchamps , ended with further successes for the Wyer-Porsche 917K duo Pedro Rodríguez and Jackie Oliver.
Team preparations
Two weeks before the 1000 km race, the Targa Florio took place in Sicily , which ended with a one-two for Alfa Romeo. Nino Vaccarella and Toine Hezemans won the T33 / 3 ahead of their team-mates Andrea de Adamich and Gijs van Lennep . Autodelta , the Alfa Romeo team, also seemed well equipped for the race at the Nürburgring . In the week before the race, the racetrack was rented for extensive test drives for several days. Four 3-liter sports cars and a GTA were reported. Three T33 / 3s were entrusted to the driver pairings Andrea de Adamich / Henri Pescarolo , Toine Hezemans / Nino Vaccarella and Rolf Stommelen / Nanni Galli . Galli was fit again after a hand injury sustained during training for the 1000 km race in Monza. For the first time, a T33 / TT / 3 was also reported, which had a frame made of aluminum tubular profiles. The car that Carlo Facetti and Teodoro Zeccoli were supposed to drive was withdrawn before the start of the race. The two Germans Jörg Klasen and Peter Otto drove the GTA .
Race preparation at Porsche was far more problematic. As in the previous year , the two Porsche teams from Wyer and Dechent were not supposed to use the Porsche 917K, but the light and agile 908/03 . However, three cars had an accident at the Targa Florio, with one car burned out completely. For the race on the Ring, two cars had to be repaired and completely rebuilt in the factory department in Zuffenhausen in day and night shifts , as both teams wanted to use two 908/03s each. The John Wyer team relied on the regular drivers Pedro Rodríguez / Jackie Oliver and Jo Siffert / Derek Bell for the drivers. Vic Elford / Gérard Larrousse and Gijs van Lennep / Helmut Marko started for the International Martini Racing Team . A third Porsche was registered for the Martini team. The driver team of the 908/02, called the aristocratic duo by the competition, consisted of Ferfried von Hohenzollern and Leopold von Bayern . Scuderia Ferrari reported only one car , a 312PB for Jacky Ickx and Clay Regazzoni .
The race
The workout
When the first practice session began on the Friday before race Sunday, the four Porsche 908/03 were still not in the pits ready for use. The vehicles had only arrived at the track the night before and were only made ready for the race. After a night's rain, the track was still partially wet, but Rolf Stommelen drove lap times of less than 10 minutes in the Alfa Romeo. Clay Regazzoni drove the Ferrari 312PB on the now dry track, the fastest time of the day in 7: 59.800 minutes. Ferfried von Hohenzollern drove a few fast laps in the Porsche 908/02 before he hit the grass of the verge with one side of the car after the carousel section. In the following accident, the Porsche was so badly damaged that the car could not be used on race day. Jacky Ickx started from pole position and drove a time of 7: 36.100 minutes with the Ferrari 312PB on Saturday. The Ferrari 512 of Georg Loos and Franz Pesch had a gearbox failure in training. Since the team was missing a second gearbox, they started loading the car and material for return transport on Saturday evening. The Swiss Herbert Müller noticed the activity and loaned Loos his replacement gearbox. This enabled Pesch and Loos to start on Sunday.
The course of the race
The race opened on Sunday at 11 a.m. with an Indianapolis start . Jacky Ickx in the Ferrari took the lead, followed by Rolf Stommelen in the Alfa Romeo and the Porsches of Vic Elford, Jo Siffert and Gijs van Lennep. While Ickx drove up and away in front, a fierce duel for second place broke out between Stommelen and Elford. After the sixth lap, Ickx had to stop at the pits to refill the cooling water. As a result, Stommelen took the lead in front of Elford, who followed closely. After the seventh lap, Jo Siffert stopped at the pits. The engine mount was broken on both sides, causing the engine to drag on the ground. The car had to be taken out of the race and Siffert switched to Pedro Rodríguez's car. After the first routine stops, Jacky Ickx took the lead again. Nanni Galli took over the car from Stommelen and Larrousse the cockpit from Elford. On lap 14, the Stommelen / Galli-Alfa Romeo retired with engine failure. The factory Ferrari lead ended on lap 21 when Clay Regazzoni, who had since taken over the car from Ickx, had to park the 312PB with its completely overheated engine.
Elford and Larrousse won the race with a lead of almost 2 minutes on Rodríguez and Siffert's Porsches. In the last laps Helmut Marko was able to catch up on Pedro Rodríguez by more than a minute, but had to admit defeat to the Mexican by a tenth of a second when the checkered flag fell and finished third with his team-mate van Lennep.
With this success, Porsche won the one-make cup of the sports car world championship for the third time in a row.
Race of the Formula Super Vau
As a supporting event, a Formula Super Vau race over a distance of 5 laps took place on race Sunday at 9 a.m. In training, the Austrian Erich Breinsberg achieved the fastest training time in an Austro-Kaimann with 9: 07,000 minutes. Breinsberg, who set the fastest lap in the race with a time of 8: 59.600 minutes and for the first time undercut the 9-minute limit with a Formula Vee monoposto , won ahead of his team mates Christian Dietrich and Manfred Schurti .
