Clemens Schickentanz (born May 24, 1944 in Coesfeld ) is a former German automobile racing driver .

Career

Schickentanz started his racing career in touring car racing in 1967 . In the same year he achieved his first class victory at the ADAC Junior Trophy in Zandvoort with a BMW 2000 TI in the touring car class 2000 and came third in the overall result. Also in 1967 and in the following years, he successfully drove BMW, Alfa Romeo and Porsche racing cars in the German Automobile Circuit Championship (DARM) and other touring car races to achieve good placements and victories in the GT class.

In 1968 he drove in the 24-hour race of Spa-Francorchamps with Hans-Dieter Dutsi and Josef von Kerckerinck in an Alfa Romeo 1300 GT Junior in 12th place overall and 1st place in Group 5 1.3 to his first long-distance race success.

In 1970 Schickentanz won the first 24-hour race on the Nürburgring with Hans-Joachim Stuck on a BMW 2002 TI and celebrated the first overall victory.

At the 24-hour race of Spa-Francorchamps in the European Touring Car Championship in 1971, he and Hans Heyer achieved a respectable success when they took second overall place and the 6th place in a Mercedes 300 SEL 6.3 converted by AMG into a 6.8-liter racing car Class victory of Division 3 achieved. In 1978 again with Hans Heyer and in 1980 with Jörg Denzel , he repeated his races for AMG in a Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC in the European Touring Car Championship.

In the German Racing Championship (DRM) he drove in the 1st division regularly from 1972 to 1976 in the races on the Nürburgring and Hockenheim. In 1973 he took part in a complete racing season and reached 6th place in the overall standings.

From 1972 to 1975 Schickentanz competed for the racing teams Oldenkott Pipe and Tobacco Racing , Samson Kremer and most recently for Tebernum Porsche Racing with a Porsche 911 Carrera RSR in the European championship for GT vehicles. His greatest success in his career was winning the title in this racing series in 1973. In 1974 he was able to secure 3rd place overall in the European Championship for GT vehicles.

In addition to many different GT and touring car races, he also drove a few races in the 2-liter sports car European championship and in the interseries . There he drove a Chevron B19 Ford from 1971 and a year later a Chevron B21 BMW. His best placement with a 2-liter sports prototype racing car was 7th in the 1971 Southwest Cup in Hockenheim.

From 1971 to 1976 and after interruptions also in 1978, 1983 and 1984 he drove with Porsche racing cars from the 911 S, 911 Carrera RSR to the 934 , 935 / 77A and the Porsche 956 races in the sports car world championship . Together with his fellow drivers like Erwin Kremer , Jürgen Neuhaus , Paul Keller , Jürgen Barth and Hartwig Bertrams, he achieved a number of top results and class wins.

He competed five times in the 24 Hours of Le Mans , in which he finished 8th in 1973 and 4th in 1983 .

In 1984 Schickentanz ended his racing career after the 1000 km race at Silverstone.

Today he lives with his family in the USA.
