The 43. 24-hour race at Le Mans , the 43 s Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , and 24 Heures du Mans Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans , was held at from 14 to 15 June 1975 the Circuit des 24 Heures .

The race

New regulations

Once again, the officials of the Automobile Club de l'Ouest revised the technical regulations, and the processes before and during the race were adjusted. In 1975, the individual teams had to complete at least 20 racing laps between the respective refueling stops, and the drivers were only allowed to set their qualifying times after 9 p.m. The displacement of the sports cars was limited to a maximum of 3 liters; this restriction did not apply to the other racing classes.

Chaos at the start

On Sunday at 2:30 p.m., just 1½ hours before the start of the race, the ACO technical delegates suddenly discovered that the engine of the Ferrari Dino 308 GT4 , in which the Briton Richard Bond was at the wheel, and the Luigi Chinetti for his North American Racing Team had reported, did not comply with the regulations and was unceremoniously classified as not qualified. Chinetti discussed with the officials for over an hour, but without result. It didn't help that the Italian-born American had won the race three times as a driver; the members of the ACO remained firm. In a rage, Chinetti then withdrew the three qualified Ferrari 365 GTB / 4s from the race and caused a hectic pits in the pit lane. Three reserve cars moved up just before the race and made their way to the starting grid a few minutes before the start. In the confusion, the Swiss Claude Haldi put his Porsche 911 Carrera on the wrong starting position and triggered a chain reaction. After him, all vehicles were in the wrong places. The chaos was made perfect by a racing team from Ecuador, which - although not qualified - took advantage of the mess and started the race from the pit lane. After three laps, however, the illegal drive came to an end and the car was taken out of the race with the black flag. To date, it is the only illegal start in the 24-hour race.

The 3-fold Ortega

One of the special features of the 1975 race was that the same driver appeared several times on the entry and start list: the Ecuadorian Guillermo Ortega was on the list three times. He was the fourth pilot in illegal launched Porsche 911 Carrera RSR of Ecuador Marlboro Team reported, qualified together with Lothar Ranft for the same team not and finally drove the Porsche 908/2 of Christian Poirot .

The course of the race

After Matra withdrew from the sports car world championship and the Willi Kauhsen Racing Team , which fielded the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 in the world championship, did without, the contenders for victory in the overall standings were reduced to a few vehicles. On the one hand there were the Gulf GR8s used by John Wyer and on the other hand the JS2s brought to Le Mans by Guy Ligier . There was also a Porsche 908 prepared by Reinhold Joest . The GR8, driven by Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell , was in the lead for 23 hours . Tension only arose at the end of the race, when Jean-Louis Lafosse and Guy Chasseuil's Ligier caught up strongly on the leading car, which had been in the pits for repairs for a long time. In the end, however, the Gulf car won by one lap.
