Le Mans 24 Hours 2018
The 86th Le Mans 24-hour race , the 86 e Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , also known as 24 Heures du Mans , took place on June 16 and 17, 2018 on the Circuit des 24 Heures .
Before the race
LMP1 class
After Porsche withdrew with the LMP1 hybrid works car from the FIA World Endurance Championship at the end of the 2017 season , it was initially unclear whether LMP1 hybrid cars would even start at Le Mans in 2018. In December 2017, those responsible at Toyota Motorsport announced that they would also compete with the TS050 Hybrid in 2018 . The driver teams for the two cars were announced on January 30, 2018. Among other things, the two-time Formula 1 world champion and current McLaren driver Fernando Alonso will contest Le Mans for the entire world championship season for Toyota. Alonso has been more than two decades, the first Formula 1 driver, who in addition to his commitment to the highest international single-seater driving -Rennformel a full season in another racing series. In addition to Sébastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima, he controls the car with the number 8. Anthony Davidson lost his previous cockpit in this car and became a replacement and development driver. The car with the number 7 is driven by Mike Conway , Kamui Kobayashi and José María López .
The number of LMP1 vehicles that would compete alongside the two Toyotas remained unclear for a while. Two weeks before the race, twelve LMP1 cars were registered. Rebellion Racing returned to the highest prototype class with the R13 . There were changes to the previous year in the driver squad, as André Lotterer and Neel Jani were signed. The ENSO CLM P1 / 01 was fundamentally revised for Colin Kolles' team and in the season opening race, the 6-hour race in Spa-Francorchamps , Oliver Webb , Dominik Kraihamer and Tom Dillmann finished fourth in the overall ranking. The trio was also registered with Kolles for the Le Mans race.
SMP Racing, the team of Russian oligarch Boris Rotenberg , also reported two LMP1 cars with four Russian drivers. The car with the number 11 was driven by Mikhail Aljoschin and the former Formula 1 and DTM driver Vitaly Petrov . The third driver was Jenson Button , the 2009 Formula 1 world champion , who made his Le Mans debut. The second BR Engineering BR1 was driven by the two young drivers Matewos Issaakjan (* 1998) and Jegor Orudschew (* 1995) in a team with Stéphane Sarrazin . Sarrazin, who had finished the 24-hour run four times in second place in the overall standings, had a Toyota contract. Since he had no opportunity to take part in the race there, the contract was terminated by mutual agreement.
There were problems in advance for the three remaining LMP1 cars. Substitute Pietro Fittipaldi had a serious accident in the DragonSpeed Dallara BR1 at the 6-hour race at Spa-Francorchamps in 2018 . He broke both of his legs and the vehicle was so badly damaged that a new chassis had to be built for Le Mans. After problems with the Chinese sponsor, CEFC Manor TRSM Racing decided not to use the two Ginetta G60-LT-P1 in Spa. The reports for Le Mans remained upright.
LMP2 class
As in previous years, most of the vehicles were registered in the LMP2 class. 20 cars with known drivers entered the race. Loïc Duval , the overall winner of 2013 (with Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish in the Audi R18 E-Tron Quattro RP3 ) drove an Oreca 07 for TDS Racing. Former Formula 1 drivers Paul di Resta , Pastor Maldonado and Juan Pablo Montoya made their Le Mans debut.
LMGT-Pro
In the LMGT Pro class, six manufacturers competed against each other in various racing teams. The Porsche works team fielded four new Porsche 991 RSR GTEs , in which Nick Tandy ( 2015 ), Earl Bamber (2015 and 2017 ), Timo Bernhard ( 2010 and 2017) and Romain Dumas (2010 and 2016 ) were four former overall winners were. Two cars entered the race in a retro design. The start number 91 was painted in the Rothmans look of the 1980s. The starting number 92 was also given a "pig" design , based on the Porsche 917/20 "Sau" from 1971 .
In one of the three Ferrari 488 GTE of AF Corse was Antonio Giovinazzi his debut. As in previous years, Chip Ganassi Racing came to Le Mans with four Ford GTs . In addition to the two Corvette C7.R , Aston Martin Racing and BMW came to the track with new GT cars. In the BMW M8 GTE , among others, the former went DTM -Master Martin Tomczyk at the start.
The course of the race
The race ended with the first overall victory for the Japanese vehicle manufacturer Toyota . Sébastien Buemi , Kazuki Nakajima and Fernando Alonso won in the Toyota TS050 Hybrid with starting number 8.
Invitations
Earlier than in previous years, the Automobile Club de l'Ouest published the invitations for the 2018 race on November 22, 2017. In addition to the overall and class winners of the previous year, the respective winners of the European and Asian Le Mans Series were invited . There were also two racing teams that were nominated by the International Motor Sports Association . In addition, all teams in the four racing classes registered for the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship were given automatic starting rights. The fact that Porsche , the overall winning team in 2017, would not accept the invitation, had been known since the end of July 2017, when the company's board of directors announced the withdrawal from the LMP1 project.
Start list
Reserve vehicles
As in previous years, the ACO published a list of reserve vehicles at the same time as the first preliminary start list. Nominated in the list from one to nine, the vehicles move up in this order for failures in the original starting list.
