Le Mans 24 hour race 2016
The 84th 24 Hours of Le Mans , the 84 e Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , also Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans, France , took place from June 18 to 19, 2016 on the Circuit des 24 heures took place.
Before the race
As early as June 2015, those responsible at the Automobile Club de l'Ouest decided to increase the number of starters from 56 to 58. On January 25, 2016, the ACO then published the first invitation list of 16 participants. The four Le Mans class winners from the previous year were invited , plus the respective overall and class winners of the European and Asian Le Mans Series , as well as the winning teams from the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship .
At the press conference on February 5, 2016, ACO President Pierre Fillon surprisingly announced that there will be a total of 60 participating teams in 2016; this expansion was originally planned for the 2017 race. Fillon also announced that the two-time overall Le Mans winner Alexander Wurz in 2016 will act as Grand Marshal and thus drive the safety car on the warm-up lap.
At the beginning of June, the ACO published the updated start list with all 60 participants.
Garage 56
Garage 56 has been reserved for teams with special technical innovations in the past few years. In 2012 , the DeltaWing driven by Marino Franchitti , Michael Krumm and Satoshi Motoyama was in this garage. In 2014 the Nissan ZEOD RC was housed there.
In 2016, this special box was made available to a driver: the severely disabled Frenchman Frédéric Sausset . Sausset had both legs and hands amputated because of a bacterial infection . OAK Racing faced major challenges when converting the Morgan LMP2 , as Sausset shared the cockpit with two healthy professional racing drivers. Sausset was lifted into the vehicle with the seat and taken out again. With a device on his thighs, he could operate the accelerator and brake. He steered with a special hand prosthesis on his right arm.
Racing partners were Christophe Tinseau and Jean-Bernard Bouvet . Tinseau, who resigned at the end of 2012, returned to Le Mans for this race.
Pre-tests
Two days before the start of the pre-tests, which took place on June 4th and 5th, Larbre Compétition announced that Paolo Ruberti would not start . The experienced Italian, who could look back on six Le Mans participations, had a serious accident on June 2nd during a demonstration drive at the Hockenheimring . Jean-Philippe Belloc joined the team as a substitute .
There were two further driver changes in the LMP2 class. At SO24! by Lombard Racing (# 22) replaced Olivier Lombard with Érik Maris and Greaves Motorsport (# 41) replaced Kuba Giermaziak with Nathanaël Berthon . During the preliminary tests, all teams also announced their replacement drivers.
Race course
Due to heavy rain, the race started behind the safety car . After the track had dried out, the race developed into a duel between Toyota and Porsche, with the lead changing frequently due to different fueling strategies. The two Audi vehicles fell behind with problems, as did the Porsche with starting number 1. After 20 hours, the two Toyota and the Porsche with starting number 2 were only a few seconds apart.
The race was only decided in the last few minutes. The number 5 Toyota TS050 Hybrid led almost the entire race . A few minutes before the end, Kazuki Nakajima had a lead of 1 minute and 30 seconds over the Porsche 919 Hybrid driven by Neel Jani . 3 minutes and 20 seconds before the checkered flag fell, the Toyota stopped on the last lap at start and finish due to problems in the drive train. Nakajima managed to get the car going again and only drive on with the electric motor, but Neel Jani drove past to victory on the last lap. According to the regulations, the participants had to drive their last lap under six minutes. Since Nakajima needed almost twice as many minutes for the lap with the electric motor, the Toyota did not make it into the final ranking, even though the race director waved it off as second.
Four days after the end of the race, the press department of Toyota Motorsport GmbH announced the reason for the car with the number 5 stopping. There was a defect in the plug connection between the turbocharger and intercooler , which led to a dysfunction of the turbocharger control and to a loss of power.
Class wins
With 23 vehicles in the race, the LMP2 class had the most participants in a racing class. The class win went to the French Signatech Alpine team. The Alpine A460 , an adapted Oreca 05 with Nissan - V8 engine , was developed by Gustavo Menezes , Nicolas Lapierre and Stephane Richelmi down. Of its 357 laps, the Alpine was in the lead for the last 196 without interruption. For Nicolas Lapierre, who lost his cockpit after his accident in the TS040 Hybrid on a wet road at Toyota in 2014 , it was the second victory in this class after the success of the previous year . The second-placed G-Drive Racing Team also covered 357 laps. The drivers in the Oreca 05 were Roman Rusinov , René Rast and Will Stevens .
In 1966 Ford had celebrated a one-two-three-way victory with the GT40 and drivers Bruce McLaren , Chris Amon , Ken Miles , Denis Hulme , Ronnie Bucknam and Dick Hutcherson . Exactly 50 years later to the day, Ford celebrated another victory at Le Mans with a GT . One of the four GT racing cars with a 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine used by Chip Ganassi won the LMGTE Pro class. For Sébastien Bourdais , who was born in Le Mans , as a partner of Joey Hand and Dirk Müller, it was the first class win in his home race. Of the 340 laps covered, the Ford 316 was at the top of the racing class.
In the LMGTE AM, the Americans Bill Sweedler , Townsend Bell and Jeff Segal in a Ferrari 458 Italia GT2 were victorious.
