Loïc Duval (born June 12, 1982 in Chartres ) is a French racing driver . From 2006 to 2012 he drove in the Super GT , which he won in 2010. From 2006 to 2014 he drove in the Super Formula (formerly Formula Nippon) and became champion there in 2009. From 2012 to 2016 he competed in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC); In 2013 he became world driver champion there. He has also been driving in the FIA Formula E Championship since 2015 .
Career
Duval began his motorsport career in karting , in which he was active from 1992 to 2001. Among other things, he was third in the Formula A class of the Kart World Championship in 2000 . In 2002, Duval in Formula racing and immediately won the French Formula Renault Campus . He won nine of 16 races. In 2003 Duval started for Graff Racing in the French Formula Renault and also achieved the title in this championship in his first season. At the beginning of 2004 he was accepted into the support program of the Formula 1 team Renault , of which he was a member until the end of 2005. In 2004 Duval drove for the OPEL Team Signature-Plus in the Formula 3 Euro Series . He scored two podium finishes and finished the season in twelfth place overall. With 22 to 37 points he was defeated by his team-mate Giedo van der Garde . Duval also drove for Signature in Formula 3 individual events. In 2005 Duval stayed with Signature-Plus in the Formula 3 Euro Series. He finished second three times and third twice and improved to sixth place in the drivers' standings. Within the team, he prevailed against James Rossiter with one point . At the Macau Grand Prix 2006 Duval started for ASM and finished sixth.
In 2006 Duval left Europe and moved to Nakajima Racing in Japan . He started both in Formula Nippon and in the Super GT . In Formula Nippon, Duval won two races and was fourth in the overall standings. He clearly beat his teammate Hideki Muto with 25 to 1 points. In the Super GT, he shared a cockpit at Nakajima Racing with Mutō. The two won a race and finished eleventh in the drivers' championship. In the 2006/07 Duval drove for the French team in the A1GP . First as a rookie, then as a regular driver. He took part in eight races and achieved four podium finishes with three second places and one third place. Duval then returned to Japan and competed again for Nakajima Racing in both racing series. In Formula Nippon, Duval achieved four podiums and finished sixth overall. Internally, he was defeated by his new teammate Takashi Kogure with 31 to 41 points. In the Super GT, Duval won a race with Fabio Carbone and came second in the drivers' championship. In the 2007/08 season , Duval started again in the A1GP and took part in twelve races. He won one and was on the podium a total of seven times. He was the only rider on the team to achieve podium finishes. Duval then returned to Nakajima Racing in Japan. In Formula Nippon, he won two races and improved to second place in the final ranking. He was defeated by the master Tsugio Matsuda with 62 to 93.5 points and prevailed internally against Kogure, who had scored 41 points. In the Super GT he finished tenth overall with Katsuyuki Hiranaka with a second place. In addition, Duval made his debut for ORECA in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2008 and finished eighth in the LMP1 category. He also started another long-distance race in the Le Mans Series for the racing team . As in previous years, Duval also competed in the A1GP in winter 2008/09 and achieved one victory and two podium finishes in six competitions.
In 2009, Duval started for Nakajima Racing in Japan for the fourth year. In Formula Nippon, he won four races and won the championship with 62 to 40 points ahead of his compatriot Benoît Tréluyer . His teammate Kogure had scored 37 points. In the Super GT, he formed a team with Yuhki Nakayama . With a sixth place as the best result, the two finished 16th in the drivers' championship. In addition, Duval and Nicolas Lapierre achieved two podium places at the only race weekend of the Asian Le Mans Series in Okayama , thus securing third place overall. In 2010 Duval left Nakajima Racing and switched to Dandelion Racing within Formula Nippon . He won two races and was third overall. Internally he prevailed against Takuya Izawa with 39.5 to 7 points. In the Super GT, Duval started together with Kogure for Weider Honda Racing . The two won a race and decided the championship for themselves. Duval also competed in endurance races in Europe: he took part in two races in the 2010 Le Mans Series and in the Le Mans 24-hour race for ORECA . In 2011 Duval won two races with Kogure for Weider Honda Racing in the Super GT. They finished third in the championship. In addition, he took part in three races of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup in the LMP1 class for ORECA and won the 12-hour race at Sebring together with Lapierre and Olivier Panis . Duval paused in formula racing in 2011.
In 2012 Duval returned to Formula Nippon and was given a cockpit with Team Kygnus Sunoco . With a second and two third places, he was on the podium three times. He finished sixth in the overall standings. Duval started for TOM’S in the Super GT . His teammate was Kazuki Nakajima . Duval did not compete for a run and finished eleventh overall with a second place as the best result. In addition, Duval received a cockpit at Audi as a works driver in the newly founded FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) with Audi Sport Team Joest for the first three races. At the season opener in Sebring , Duval achieved a podium finish with Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas in second place. Duval contested the next races together with Dumas and Marc Gené . The trio won at Spa-Francorchamps and finished fourth at Le Mans . In the drivers' world championship, Duval and Dumas were in sixth place. In 2013 , Duval stayed in the Japanese formula series, which was now called Super Formula . This year his racing team was called Kygnus Sunoco Team LeMans . Duval took part in four out of seven races and was always in the top four. He won a race and came third in the championship. Duval stopped his involvement in the Super GT. In the 2013 FIA World Endurance Championship , Duval became a regular driver for Audi Sport Team Joest and competed alongside Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish in all races. The trio won at Silverstone , Le Mans and Austin and was always on the podium with the exception of the last race. The three won the drivers' world championship.
In 2014 Duval won a Super Formula race for the Kygnus Sunoco Team LeMans. He was on the podium four times and finished fourth overall. Duval left the racing series at the end of the season. In the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship , Duval stayed with Audi Sport Team Joest. His team-mate McNish was replaced by Lucas di Grassi . Duval had a serious accident during practice for the 2014 Le Mans 24-hour race . Duval suffered comparatively minor injuries with skin injuries on his leg and neck. He dropped out for the race and took a month off. In the drivers' world championship Duval was seventh with two second places as the best results. At the beginning of 2015 Duval also entered the FIA Formula E Championship with Dragon Racing . At the Berlin ePrix he achieved his first podium finish with third place. He repeated this result at the last race in London . He finished the season in ninth place overall.
In the 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship , Duval formed a driver trio with di Grassi and Oliver Jarvis for Audi Sport Team Joest . The three drivers achieved the only podium finish in Austin in third place and finished the season in fourth place in the drivers' world championship. In addition, Duval competed for Dragon in Formula E in 2015/16 . With 60 to 83 points he was internally defeated by Jérôme D'Ambrosio and finished eighth overall.
In 2016 Duval, di Grassi and Jarvis stayed with Audi Sport Team Joest in the FIA World Endurance Championship. The trio won the 6-hour races in Spa-Francorchamps and Bahrain . The three racing drivers finished the season in second place in the world championship. After Audi withdrew from the FIA World Endurance Championship at the end of the season, Duval's involvement in the racing series ended. Duval also stayed with Dragon Racing for the 2016/17 FIA Formula E Championship . After the third race, he finished 13th overall.
In 2017 Duval took over an Audi factory cockpit in the DTM .
