report
background
After the Hong Kong ePrix , Sébastien Buemi led the drivers' standings with seven points ahead of Lucas di Grassi and ten points ahead of Nick Heidfeld . In the team standings, Renault e.dams was 19 points ahead of the ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport and Andretti Formula E teams with the same number of points .
Daniel Abt , Buemi and di Grassi received a so-called FanBoost , they were allowed to increase the output of their second vehicle to up to 200 kW and thus use up to 100 kilojoules of additional energy. Buemi and di Grassi received the second FanBoost in the second race of the season and the ninth each in the FIA Formula E Championship, for Abt it was the first FanBoost of his career in the 23rd race .
training
In the first free practice, di Grassi set the fastest time in 1: 21.923 minutes ahead of Buemi and Nicolas Prost .
In the second free practice session, Buemi was fastest with a lap time of 1: 20.599 minutes ahead of Felix Rosenqvist and Jean-Éric Vergne . The training was stopped a few minutes before the end of the training time after an accident by Sam Bird .
Qualifying
Qualifying began at 12:00 p.m. and took place in four groups of five drivers each, each group had six minutes in which the drivers had a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 170 kW and then a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 200 kW were allowed to drive. Vergne was fastest with a lap time of 1: 20.993 minutes.
The five fastest drivers then drove in the first five positions in the individual time trial called Superpole . Rosenqvist secured pole position with a lap time of 1: 21.509 minutes and thus three points. The other positions were occupied by Buemi, Sam Bird , Nelson Piquet jr. and Vergne, who received the instruction from his team too late to go out onto the track and thus could not take part in the pole shootout. Buemi was subsequently moved five starting positions back because his vehicle was too light in the pole shootout .
run
The race lasted 33 laps.
At the start, the positions at the top remained unchanged. Rosenqvist quickly managed to break away from the rest of the field. The first change in position in the front field occurred on the third lap when Buemi passed his team-mate Prost. On the same lap di Grassi overtook Heidfeld, two laps later both of them overtook Robin Frijns .
Rosenqvist steadily increased his lead and also set the fastest lap of the race at the time. Meanwhile Buemi overtook Abbot, Vergne passed Piquet. Thus Rosenqvist led before Bird, Vergne, Piquet, Buemi, Abt, Prost, Oliver Turvey , António Félix da Costa and di Grassi. Félix da Costa parked his vehicle on the track shortly afterwards, but after two laps he managed to restart the vehicle and drive into the pit lane, where he changed vehicles.
Bird was instructed by radio by his team to save energy in order to delay the change of vehicle by one lap. Vergne, who had less power left in his battery at this point, overtook him on lap 15.
On lap 16, Rosenqvist, Vergne, Piquet, Maro Engel , Stéphane Sarrazin , Heidfeld and Ma Qinghua were the first drivers to come to the pits for regular vehicle changes. The minimum time for changing vehicles was 50 seconds. Engel and Piquet had a technical problem with the second vehicle, so they fell far behind. One lap later, all remaining drivers changed their vehicles. Bird had to save so much energy on this lap that he had to let Buemi pass before the pit stop.
After the pit stops, Rosenqvist led in front of Vergne, Buemi, Bird, Prost, Abt, di Grassi, Turvey, Sarrazin and Heidfeld. Vergne drove too fast in the pit lane and received a drive-through penalty, which he started on lap 23. It fell back to fifth place. Félix da Costa drove the fastest lap of the race to date.
Like Félix da Costa before, Loïc Duval parked his vehicle on the track for a short time. He also managed to restart the car. He pitted and had the vehicle converted to full downforce.
Rosenqvist now had to save energy, his lead over Buemi melted from lap to lap. Buemi also used his FanBoost and caught Rosenqvist by more than a second on lap 25 alone. He finally overtook him on lap 27 and took the lead. Di Grassi passed Abbot on the same lap. Then both Abt pilots caught up with Vergne, who like Rosenqvist had to save energy.
In the following laps, Bird also shortened the gap to Rosenqvist and overtook him on lap 31. Behind them, di Grassi and Abt passed Vergne one after the other. On the last lap, Vergne had to save a lot of energy in order to even reach the goal. He drove extremely slowly and was overtaken by Turvey shortly before the finish line. Duval drove the fastest lap of the race on this lap.
Buemi won ahead of Bird and Rosenqvist. The remaining points were placed by Prost, di Grassi, Abt, Turvey, Vergne, Heidfeld and José María López . The point for the fastest race lap went to Duval.
Buemi built his lead in the overall standings on di Grassi, Prost was now third. Renault e.dams stayed ahead of ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport in the team standings, while Mahindra Racing came third .
