report
background
After the Diriyya E-Prix , António Félix da Costa led the drivers' standings with ten points ahead of Jean-Éric Vergne and with 13 points ahead of Jérôme D'Ambrosio . In the team standings, DS Techeetah was one point ahead of BMW i Andretti Motorsport and twelve points ahead of Mahindra Racing .
Pascal Wehrlein made his debut in the FIA Formula E Championship with Mahindra Racing . At the start of the season he was represented by the previous Mahindra regular driver Felix Rosenqvist , as he was contractually bound to HWA until the end of 2018 .
With Sébastien Buemi , a former winner entered this race.
Buemi, Félix da Costa, Felipe Massa , Stoffel Vandoorne and Wehrlein received a so-called fan boost in the race , they were allowed to increase the power of their vehicle to 240 kW to 250 kW after the 23rd minute of the race and thus use up to 100 kilojoules of additional energy . Buemi received his 28th Fan Boost in the FIA Formula E Championship, Felix da Costa, Massa and Vandoorne received the additional energy for the second time after the Diriyya E-Prix 2018.
training
In the first free practice, Robin Frijns set the fastest time in 1: 17.808 minutes ahead of Félix da Costa and Sam Bird .
Mitch Evans was fastest in the second free practice with a lap time of 1: 17.262 minutes ahead of André Lotterer and Buemi. At Bird and di Grassi, the drive train had to be changed due to a defect in the coolant pump . Even with Felipe Massa , the drive has been replaced due to a technical defect.
Qualifying
Qualifying started at 12:00 p.m. and took place in four groups of five or six drivers each, each group had six minutes in which the drivers had a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 200 kW and then a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 250 kW were allowed to drive. Bird was fastest with a lap time of 1: 17.851 minutes.
The six fastest drivers then drove in the first six positions in the individual time trial called Superpole . Bird secured pole position with a lap time of 1: 17.489 minutes and thus three points. The other positions were occupied by Vergne, Félix da Costa, Buemi, Alexander Sims and Evans.
Félix da Costa was moved three positions back because he exceeded the maximum permitted power of 200 kW on his warm-up lap in qualifying.
run
The race lasted 45 minutes plus one lap. Each driver had to activate the attack mode twice; after activation, the vehicle produced a maximum of 225 kW instead of 200 kW for a period of four minutes.
Bird started well, while Vergne did not get off the grid well and came under direct pressure from Buemi. When braking into the first corner , Vergne slowed down, collided with Bird and spun. Since his car came to a stop in the middle of the track against the direction of travel, several pilots, including Buemi, had to use the outer lane and thus lost positions. Lucas di Grassi collided with Wehrlein in midfield, and there was also contact between the two HWA drivers Paffett and Vandoorne. Paffett, Vandoorne and Wehrlein had to give up the race shortly afterwards with damaged vehicles, while Vergne drove at the end of the field. At the end of the first round, Bird was leading in front of Sims, Félix da Costa, Frijns, D'Ambrosio, di Grassi, Oliver Turvey , José María López , Daniel Abt and Oliver Rowland .
Sims let his teammate Félix da Costa pass shortly afterwards, who then put Bird under pressure. Turvey meanwhile fell behind López and Abbot. Before turn five, Félix da Costa sat down next to Bird, who skipped the following chicane. In the process, however, he lost so much momentum that Félix da Costa and Sims passed him on the following straight.
In the back of the field, Lotterer and Vergne started a race to catch up, both overtaking various competitors. At the front, the two Andretti drivers pulled away, followed by Frijns, D'Ambrosio and di Grassi Bird, who was now sixth. Halfway through the race, Félix da Costa was leading ahead of Sims, Frijns, D'Ambrosio, di Grassi, Bird, López, Lotterer, Abt and Buemi.
D'Ambrosio and di Grassi overtook Frijns, but shortly afterwards he again passed di Grassi with the attack mode. Bird also overtook di Grassi shortly afterwards with the attack mode. Lotterer let Vergne pass, then Buemi and di Grassi passed. At the front, Félix da Costa and Sims led by around five seconds over D'Ambrosio. However, he then shortened the gap again and was only a little less than two seconds behind ten minutes before the end of the race.
Sims then attacked Félix da Costa, while Félix da Costa braked himself. The vehicles touched and Félix da Costa crashed into the track barrier, the suspension of his car broke and he had to give up the race. Sims had to evade and fell back to fourth place. The race management sent the safety car out onto the track to rescue Félix da Costa's car . Since the recovery took some time, the race was only released for one lap after the 45 minutes of the race. Frijns put D'Ambrosio under great pressure, but there was no overtaking maneuver.
D'Ambrosio won the race ahead of Frijns and Bird. It was the third victory for D'Ambrosio in the FIA Formula E Championship and the first since the Mexico City ePrix 2016 . Frijns achieved his best placement and his second podium finish in the championship, having previously finished third at the Putrajaya ePrix 2015 . It was also the first time that both Virgin pilots stood on the podium. The remaining points were placed by Sims, Vergne, Lotterer, di Grassi, Buemi, Evans and Daniel Abt . The point for the fastest lap in the top ten went to di Grassi. It was the eighth race in a row across all seasons that both Techeetah pilots finished in the top ten.
D'Ambrosio took the lead in the overall standings ahead of Félix da Costa and Vergne. In the team standings, DS Techeetah extended their lead, with Mahindra and BMW i Andretti Motorsport now tied behind them.
