Oliver Turvey
Oliver Turvey (born April 1, 1987 in Penrith ) is a British automobile racing driver . In 2006 he won the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award . He has been competing in the FIA Formula E Championship since 2015 .
Career
Turvey began his motorsport career in 1996 in karting , which he practiced until 2002. In 2003 he moved to the Formula racing and went zip in the British Formula. He finished fourth in the drivers' championship. He also started in the British Formula Renault winter series , which he finished in 18th place. In 2004 Turvey received a cockpit in the British Formula BMW with Team SWR . He won a race and was seventh overall at the end of the season. He also took part in two races in the Asian Formula 3 championship . In 2005 Turvey stayed with Team SWR in the British Formula BMW and finished eighth in the drivers' championship. In 2006 Turvey contested his third British Formula BMW season for Team Loctite . He got into the series for the fourth race weekend. With five wins he improved to second place overall behind Niall Breen . Turvey also made two guest starts in the national class of the British Formula 3 Championship .
In 2007 Turvey competed for Jenzer Motorsport in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and finished eighth in the overall standings. He also started for Jenzer in the Italian Formula Renault and finished ninth in the overall classification. In addition, Turvey took part in three races of the Asian Formula 3 championship and made two guest starts in the British Porsche Carrera Cup . In 2008 Turvey moved to Carlin Motorsport and started in the British Formula 3 championship. With four wins he finished second in the championship behind his team-mate Jaime Alguersuari . He lost the internal duel with 234 to 251 points. In 2009 Turvey stayed with Carlin Motorsport and switched to Formula Renault 3.5 together with Alguersuari . With a win, Turvey finished fourth overall at the end of the season and was thus better than Alguersuari, who competed in Formula 1 at the same time. At the beginning of December 2009, Turvey took part in Formula 1 test drives for McLaren .
In the GP2 Asia series season 2009/10 Turvey moved to iSport International in the GP2 Asia series . On the second race weekend at the Yas Marina Circuit , Turvey won the main race ahead of his teammate Davide Valsecchi . Turvey finished the season in sixth overall while Valsecchi won the championship. Turvey then drove in 2010 for iSport International in the GP2 series. After he scored his first points in fifth place in the first race, several race weekends followed without points. At his home race at Silverstone , he finished second in the GP2 series for the first time. With a total of four podium finishes, he finished sixth in the overall standings at the end of the season. With 48 to 31 he prevailed internally against Valsecchi. Following the GP2 season, he again completed Formula 1 test drives for McLaren. In 2011 , Turvey started in the GP2 Asia series for Ocean Racing Technology . He finished the season in 16th place overall. Due to a lack of budget Turvey received no contract for the subsequent GP2 season . On the third race weekend of the GP2 series, he resigned for Carlin once. In the final classification he finished 25th overall. At the end of the year he tested again for McLaren. Turvey also made his debut as a McLaren works driver in GT racing and took part in three races in the Blancpain Endurance Series .
In 2012 , Turvey was McLaren's Formula 1 test driver. In this role he made the first exit of the McLaren MP4-27 . He did not compete in races that year. In 2013 Turvey received an LMP2 cockpit in the European Le Mans Series (ELMS) at Jota Sport . He shared the cockpit with Simon Dolan , the team owner. The two won a race and came third in the drivers' championship. In addition, Turvey took part in the 6-hour race of Spa-Francorchamps and the 24-hour race of Le Mans for Jota . He also took part in two races in the FIA GT Series as a guest starter and stayed with McLaren as a Formula 1 test driver. In 2014 Turvey was again a Formula 1 test driver at McLaren. He only completed one race that year. Together with Dolan and Harry Tincknell he competed in the 24-hour race of Le Mans . The trio finished fifth overall and won the LMP2 class.
In 2015 Turvey drove for Drago Modulo Honda Racing in the Super GT in Japan. Together with Takashi Kogure , he was twelfth overall. He also competed in two races in the FIA Formula E Championship for the NEXTEV TCR Formula E team, which Campos is in charge of . In addition, Turvey took part again for Jota in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and remained a Formula 1 test driver at McLaren. In the 2015/16 FIA Formula E Championship , Turvey received a full-time cockpit with the NEXTEV TCR Formula E Team. With eleven to eight points, he sat internally against Nelson Piquet jr. and achieved 14th place overall. In addition, Turvey drove individual Super GT races for Drago Modulo Honda Racing in 2016. In the 2016/17 season Turvey stayed with NextEV in Formula E. At the end of the season, he finished twelfth overall.
In 2017/18 Turvey started again for the team now called NIO Formula E Team . With a second place at the Mexico City E-Prix , he achieved his first podium result in the series. At the end of the season, he finished tenth in the drivers' championship.
Turvey also competed for NIO again in 2018/19 . With seven points, he finished 20th in the drivers' championship at the end of the season.
Personal
Turvey is a graduate of the University of Cambridge and wrote his thesis as an engineer on the subject of "Aerodynamics in Formula 1".
