The Punta del Este ePrix 2015 (officially: 2015 FIA Formula E Julius Baer Punta del Este ePrix ) took place on December 19 on the Punta del Este Formula E racetrack in Punta del Este and was the third race of the FIA Formula E-Championship 2015/16 . It was the second Punta del Este ePrix.
report
background
After the Putrajaya ePrix , Lucas di Grassi led the drivers' standings with eight points ahead of Sébastien Buemi and with 19 points ahead of Sam Bird . In the team standings, ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport was 13 points ahead of Renault e.dams and 22 points ahead of Mahindra Racing .
Compared to the previous year, the route has been changed slightly. The first chicane, which was still a right-left combination last year, was converted into a left-right combination so that the pit exit was no longer on the ideal line. In addition, two more chicanes were built closer to reduce the speed. As a result of the modifications, the route was shortened by 23 meters. The number of laps has been increased by two laps to 33, increasing the race distance from 87.048 km to 91.905 km.
After the Trulli Formula E Team had not contested the first two races, the team announced the immediate withdrawal from the FIA Formula E Championship in the week before the race.
Nick Heidfeld had to skip the race because he injured his left hand in Putrajaya. Oliver Rowland started for him .
With Buemi, a former winner entered the race.
Bird, Stéphane Sarrazin and Jean-Éric Vergne received a so-called FanBoost , they were allowed to increase the output of their second vehicle once to up to 200 kW and thus use up to 100 kilojoules of additional energy.
training
In the first free practice session, Buemi set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 15.179 minutes ahead of Bird and di Grassi. The training had to be interrupted for the first time after Jean-Éric Vergne had to park his vehicle on the track with a technical defect. Immediately after the clearance there was another interruption, as Vergne was still on the route and was looking for an exit. After an accident by Bird, there was another interruption shortly before the end of the training.
In the second free practice session, Nicolas Prost set the fastest lap in 1: 15.405 minutes ahead of di Grassi and Buemi. Buemi seriously damaged one of his two vehicles in an accident. Training also had to be interrupted after Daniel Abt hit the track barrier and parts of his rear wing were on the track.
Qualifying
Qualifying started at 12:00 p.m. and took place in two groups of four drivers each and two groups of five drivers each, each group had 6 minutes to set a fast lap. Buemi set the fastest lap time in 1: 15.011 minutes.
The five fastest drivers then drove in the first five positions in the individual time trial called Superpole . Buemi and di Grassi, the two fastest drivers in qualifying, made driving errors and therefore had no chance of first place. Jérôme D'Ambrosio secured pole position with a lap time of 1: 15.498 minutes and thus three points. The other positions were occupied by Loïc Duval , Bird, di Grassi and Buemi.
run
The race lasted 33 laps. Jacques Villeneuve was unable to take part in the race after an accident in qualifying, so that the starting field consisted of only 17 drivers.
The vehicles on the ideal line started much better, i.e. the vehicles on the other side of the street, which all lost at least one place. After the start, D'Ambrosio was ahead of Bird, Duval, Buemi, di Grassi, Abt, Prost, Bruno Senna , António Félix da Costa and Robin Frijns .
In the third lap, Félix da Costa passed Senna, who was attacked by Frijns immediately afterwards. He had to skip a chicane and damaged his vehicle, he fell back to the end of the field and then had to go to the pits for repairs. Buemi passed Duval on lap four and was now in third place. Buemi then put pressure on Bird, who could not defend himself against the attacks for long and had to let Buemi pass. Di Grassi braked himself when attacking Duval and fell shortly behind Abt, but passed again shortly afterwards. Duval overtook Bird and was now in third place.
Buemi narrowed the gap to D'Ambrosio within one lap, he was more than a second faster. Buemi overtook D'Ambrosio on lap eight and took the lead. Abt fell behind Prost and Félix da Costa. Di Grassi overtook Bird on lap ten and was now fourth.
On the twelfth lap, Senna braked himself and hit the lane, but he continued the race. Buemi moved further away from the front and was already more than four seconds ahead.
At the end of the 16th lap, Abt, Sarrazin, Oliver Turvey and Senna, the first drivers to come to the pits to change vehicles, the minimum time for changing vehicles was 59 seconds. One lap later, all the other drivers, with the exception of Rowland, drove to change vehicles, who thereby took the lead for one lap. Di Grassi passed both Dragon drivers with a faster pit stop, Duval also fell behind Bird.
Bird had technical problems and initially slowed down on the lap after changing vehicles, then he even had to park the vehicle on the track. He was able to continue shortly afterwards, but stopped again shortly afterwards and got out. At this point, Duval drove the fastest lap of the race to date. The race management announced a full course yellow for the recovery of Bird's car. Buemi led before di Grassi, D'Ambrosio, Duval, Prost, Félix da Costa, Abt, Turvey, Sarrazin and Nelson Piquet jr .
Buemi complained over the radio because, in his opinion, di Grassi had reduced the pace too late before the full course yellow and he was therefore able to catch up with him for several seconds. The race was released again on lap 21. Di Grassi put Buemi under pressure, followed by the two Dragon drivers and Prost, four seconds behind. Buemi managed to break away from di Grassi with the fastest race lap to date. Piquet and Vergne passed Sarrazin in quick succession. Turvey received a drive-through penalty because he had fallen short of the minimum time for the pit stop and thus fell back to twelfth place.
Vergne passed Piquet on the penultimate lap, but braked so that Piquet was able to counter. The vehicles came into contact, but both initially continued the race. When braking into the following chicane, Piquet lost control of the car and hit the track barrier. He dropped out.
Buemi won ahead of di Grassi and D'Ambrosio. It was Buemi's second win of the season. For di Grassi it was the third and for D'Ambrosio the first podium finish of the season. The remaining points were placed by Duval, Prost, Félix da Costa, Vergne, Abt, Sarrazin and Frijns. The two points for the fastest race lap went to Buemi, it was his third fastest race lap in the third race.
Buemi took the lead in the overall standings ahead of di Grassi and D'Ambrosio. Renault e.dams took the lead in the team standings ahead of ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport and Dragon Racing .
