The 2015/16 FIA Formula E Championship was the second season of the FIA Formula E Championship . It began in Beijing on October 24, 2015 and ended in London on July 3, 2016 . The season consisted of ten races.
Sébastien Buemi won the drivers' championship, while his Renault e.dams team won the team championship, as in the previous season.
Changes in 2015/16
run
The Mexico City ePrix and Paris ePrix were new in the calendar, but the races in Miami and Monaco were canceled . The Mexico City ePrix took place at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez , making it the first round of the racing series to be held on a permanent racetrack.
The implementation of the race in Berlin was questionable for a long time, as Berlin's Governing Mayor Michael Müller declared on November 12, 2015 that due to the persistently high number of refugees, the hangars and the covered main hall of Berlin-Tempelhof Airport would be needed for refugee registration and accommodation until further notice and thus other uses, such as for the Berlin ePrix, would be excluded. As alternatives, those responsible for the FIA Formula E Championship named a different location in Berlin or a relocation of the race to Munich or Nuremberg . A relocation of the race to the Norisring was canceled by the organizers there in January 2016 due to the short lead time to the race. On February 15, 2016, the Formula E organizers announced that the race would take place on a new racetrack around Strausberger Platz in the Berlin districts of Friedrichshain and Mitte .
On April 28, 2016, around five weeks before the race in Moscow , the Formula E organizers announced that the required approval from the city of Moscow was still lacking to hold the race, despite written approval from Russian President Vladimir Putin and the security service of the Kremlin . Alejandro Agag announced that the race would be canceled, should the final answer from Moscow be a long time coming. The short-term staging of the race in another city was also considered. At the beginning of May 2016 the race was canceled without replacement. The reason given by those responsible was that the permits for the road closures were not available.
Technical regulations
Compared to the previous season, the development of the motor, inverter, gearbox and cooling system was now approved, and eight manufacturers were announced by the FIA in February 2015 . These manufacturers each cooperated with a team, but were obliged to give the drive to other teams at a fixed price ceiling. Since the rear suspension on the Spark-Renault SRT_01E was connected to the gearbox housing, the manufacturers were also allowed to adapt these. All designers used their vehicle based on the Spark-Renault SRT_01E under a different name.
The performance of the motors in racing operations was increased from 150 kW to 170 kW, but the amount of energy available for a race distance remained unchanged.
Sporting regulations
Similar to the super license in Formula 1, the drivers had to show what is known as an e-license in order to participate in the series. In addition to attending a special training course on the safety of electrically powered vehicles and the sporting and technical aspects of the FIA Formula E championship, the driver had to have collected more than 20 points in the FIA's super license system in the past three years Have held a super license in the past or have participated in at least three races of the previous season of the FIA Formula E Championship.
The qualifying format has been revised. The drivers were still drawn into four groups, but now they only had six instead of ten minutes to achieve a fast lap time. Each driver was allowed to drive two timed laps, the first with an output of 170 kW, the second with 200 kW. The five fastest drivers then competed in an individual time trial called the pole shootout , where the first five starting positions were determined.
In addition, the rules for the FanBoost changed : It was now awarded after the first six minutes of the race and could only be used with the second vehicle. Instead of increasing the maximum power for five seconds, he now provided the pilots with 100 kilojoules of additional energy, which could be used for a given period of time to increase the maximum power to up to 200 kW.
After there had been various driver changes in the teams in the previous season - the teams used up to eight different drivers - there were now only a maximum of two driver changes per vehicle per season. In the last three races of the season, no driver changes were allowed at all. Exceptions to this had to be approved by those responsible for the series and were only possible in the event of force majeure .
A so-called full course yellow was introduced. This functioned similarly to the virtual safety car in Formula 1, but the maximum speed of the vehicles was limited to 50 km / h, and overtaking was also prohibited.
The penalty system during races has also been changed. In addition to a five- and a ten-second penalty, which must either be served when changing vehicles or, if they are pronounced after the change, added to the racing time, the race stewards could also issue a drive-through penalty or a ten-second penalty, depending on the offense. Issue a stop-and-go penalty.
The rule that the worst result of a driver was not included in the driver standings was dropped.
Teams
Before the season, the name sponsor Amlin separated from Aguri , so that the team was now called Team Aguri . Amlin was introduced as the new partner of the Andretti team , which was to start under the name Amlin Andretti Formula E Team . DS Automobiles cooperated with Virgin Racing, the team therefore entered under the name DS Virgin Racing Formula E Team . The Schaeffler Group developed the drive for the Abt team , the team changed the name to ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport . e.dams changed the name to Renault e.dams to emphasize the designer Renault .
Aguri was the only team to decide to contest the season with the drive system used in the previous season and not to purchase it from one of the eight manufacturers. On August 24, 2015, after massive problems in the official test drives before the season, during which only a few installation laps could be completed, Andretti decided not to use the self-developed drive during the season and also to use the drive from the previous season. Andretti parted ways with his technology partner Houston Mechatronics . Dragon Racing contested the season as a customer team for the manufacturer Venturi . All other teams use the drive produced by you or on your behalf.
After failing to contest the first two races, the Trulli Formula E Team announced the immediate withdrawal from the FIA Formula E Championship in the week before the Punta del Este ePrix .
driver
Robin Frijns started for Andretti Autosport, where he was to contest the entire season as a permanent driver. In the preseason, Andretti regularly re-staffed the second cockpit. Jacques Villeneuve , 1997 Formula 1 world champion , joined Venturi in the FIA Formula E championship, where he replaced Nick Heidfeld . After the third race of the season, however, he was replaced by Mike Conway .
Heidfeld, who started for Venturi in the preseason, switched to Mahindra . Jean-Éric Vergne moved from Andretti to Virgin. Salvador Durán switched from Aguri to Trulli , but left the team before the second race . He moved back to Aguri after the third race, where he replaced Nathanaël Berthon . After the sixth round of the season, the team was taken over by Chinese investors and Durán in turn was replaced by Qinghua Ma .
Jaime Alguersuari , who lost consciousness for a short time after the Moscow ePrix 2015 due to dehydration and fatigue and as a result of which his racing license was temporarily banned , had to give up his work for Virgin for health reasons. A few weeks before the start of the season, Alguersuari announced the end of his career. Karun Chandhok left the Mahindra team and instead focused on his sports car career. Franck Montagny was banned for two years due to a positive doping test at the Putrajaya ePrix 2014 . Oriol Servià switched to the management of Dragon Racing and took on the position of Managing Director . Jarno Trulli ended his racing career and now only acted as team boss of the Trulli team. Justin Wilson , who competed in a pre-season race for Andretti Autosport, died on August 24, 2015 after an accident at the 2015 ABC Supply 500 .
Teams and drivers
All teams and drivers use the standard Spark-Renault SRT_01E chassis and Michelin tires .
Racing calendar
In 2015/16 another eleven races were held in ten cities. All races were held on temporary racetracks. On September 9, 2015, it was announced that the opening race in Beijing had been postponed by a week due to a scheduling conflict. On September 30, 2015, the FIA World Council decided to make some changes to the racing calendar, for example, the not yet assigned date for the fifth race was pushed forward a week and the season finale in London was scheduled. On November 19, 2015 it was announced that the previously open race would take place on March 12, 2016 in Mexico City . The race in Moscow, planned for June 4, 2016, was removed from the racing calendar around a month in advance.
