history

Founding years

Johann Abt, the company's founder, portrayed by Andor Ákos .

In 1896 Johann Abt (* 1869; † 1933) set up his own forge in Kempten. He developed a skid construction that horse-drawn carts could also use in winter.

From the forge to the car repair shop

Before the First World War, the blacksmith Johann Abt began repairing and trading cars and thus created a second mainstay. The forge remained the main source of income. Johann Abt's sons Josef and Hans began training in automotive engineering in the 1920s. At the end of the 1920s, "AUTO-ABT" decoupled from the forge that Johann Abt ran until his death in 1933. A dealership for Horch and Audi vehicles was opened in Kemptener Burgstrasse .

post war period

Josef Abt fell in World War II. In the post-war period , his widow Rosina took over his position in the management of the family business at the side of her brother-in-law Hans Abt. A master mechanic and two journeymen initially formed the staff. Since the private car sector was idle after the war, the repair of military vehicles was the main source of income. In 1948 Johann Abt (* December 20, 1935 - October 11, 2003), the son of Josef and Rosina Abt, began his apprenticeship in the family business, which found a new headquarters at Oberwanger Straße 16 in Kempten. In view of the slowly rising economy, vans were in great demand for trade and craft . Rosina Abt added the 1.1 ton Borgward transporter to its range and sold 100 units by 1950 alone. Rising car sales pushed commercial vehicles out of the range of the company, which continues to operate as "AUTO-ABT". Founder grandson Johann Abt contested his first motorcycle race in 1950. He celebrated successes in motorcycle competitions. His strength: The technically adept racing driver managed to increase the power of the engines. The first customers also wanted "a DKW that is as fast as the one from the Abbot". In 1962 Johann Abt founded "Abt Tuning" and incorporated the company into the family business. After the demise of the DKW brand, Abt tuned Audi and Volkswagen models.

1991 until today

In 1991 the headquarters of the Abt company moved from Oberwanger Straße to Daimlerstraße in Kempten-Leubas, where within a year the Kempten architect Dietmar Prokop set up a 3,500 square meter company headquarters on federal highway 7 . In addition, the company was given a new name: Abt Sportsline GmbH. Johann Abt's sons Christian (* May 8, 1967) and Hans-Jürgen Abt (* December 24, 1962) are appointed managing directors . In October 2002 a 3,000 square meter extension was inaugurated, and the Abt'sche Motorsport Museum has had a new extension since November 2013. After the death of Johann Abt in 2003, the two sons ran the company. Christian Abt left the management team at his own request in 2011. Hans-Jürgen Abt remained the sole managing director until 2019 and in the same year handed over the management to Thomas Biermaier. From now on, Hans-Jürgen Abt accompanies the management as managing partner.

In the summer of 2011, Abt Sportsline celebrated its 115th company anniversary. 170 employees work for Abt Sportsline in the headquarters in Kempten, the company's products are sold in more than 50 countries around the world. Since 2009, Abt has also been active in the field of electromobility with its e-Line .
