Timo Scheider (born November 10, 1978 in Lahnstein ) is a German automobile racing driver . He competed in the DTM from 2000 to 2016 and was the overall winner there in 2008 and 2009 .

Career

Beginnings in motorsport (1989–1999)

Signature of Timo Scheider

Scheider began his motorsport career in 1989 in kart racing , which he operated until 1994. Among other things, he won the German Junior Kart Championship in 1994 . In 1995 he switched to formula racing . He made his debut in the German Formula Renault 1800 and won the championship title straight away. In 1996, he finally came fourth overall in the German Formula Renault 2000.

In 1997 Scheider switched to the German Formula 3 championship . He won three races and was on the podium in twelve out of eighteen races. With 218 to 224 points he was finally runner-up behind Nick Heidfeld . In the following season he again won three races. In the overall standings, however, it was only enough for him to finish seventh this season. He did not appear in four races. He also took part in the Formula 3 Masters in Zandvoort and finished the race in eighth position. In 1999 Scheider completed his third year in the German Formula 3 championship. With a running success, he finished the season in sixth place overall. At the Formula 3 Masters he was twelfth this season.

DTM with Opel (2000-2004)

In 2000 Scheider switched to touring car racing in the DTM with Team Holzer , who competed with Opel vehicles. With two fourth places as the best results, he finished his debut season in twelfth place in the championship. In 2001 Scheider completed his second season for Team Holzer and took 20th place in the championship.

In 2002 Scheider improved to eighth place in the DTM drivers' championship. In 2003 Scheider switched to Team Phoenix within the DTM Opel team and he finished the season again in eighth place overall. In Zandvoort he achieved his first pole position in the DTM. His team-mate Peter Dumbreck had more than twice as many points as him this season. In 2003 he also won the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in an Opel Astra V8 together with Manuel Reuter , Volker Strycek and Marcel Tiemann .

In 2004 Scheider returned to the Holzer team. For the third year in a row, he finished eighth overall, although he was again without a podium finish. That made him the best Opel driver this season.

FIA-GT and A1GP (2005-2006)

In 2005 Scheider switched to the FIA GT Championship and competed with Michael Bartels on a Maserati MC12 of the German Vitaphone Racing Team . The two won two races, including the Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour race , and finished second overall. He then competed in formula racing for the German team in the A1 Grand Prix in winter 2005/06 . He shared the cockpit with Adrian Sutil and Sebastian Stahl . Scheider was the pilot with the most missions and the only German pilot who scored points. He achieved his best result in the main race in Laguna Seca , which he finished in second place. In 2006 he competed in a FIA GT Championship race in a Ferrari 430 GT2 and won the GT2 championship.

DTM for Audi (2006-2016)

Timo Scheider 2008

Scheider's main focus in 2006, however, was on his return to the DTM. He received an Audi from the previous season from Team Rosberg and became a teammate of Frank Stippler . He regularly scored points and finished the season in tenth place in the drivers' championship. Within the team, he prevailed against Stippler with 12 to 3 points. In 2007 Scheider moved to Abt Sportsline and received a current model of the Audi A4 DTM . After finishing fourth three times, the season finale in Hockenheim was followed by his first ever podium finish in the DTM with a second place. As the third best driver in his team, he finished the season in seventh place in the drivers' championship.

In 2008 Scheider completed his second season in a current Audi A4 DTM. Scheider clinched the first DTM victory of his career in the second race of the season in Oschersleben . He did not finish in the points in just one race this season and was on the podium a total of eight times. With 75 to 71 points he prevailed against Paul di Resta and became DTM champion for the first time.

In the 2009 season Scheider managed to defend his DTM title. He only failed to score in one race, was on the podium six times and won two races. In the championship he prevailed with 64 to 59 points against Gary Paffett . This made him the first DTM driver after Bernd Schneider to defend his title. In addition, a driver from Abt Sportsline or Audi won the championship title for the third time. No team or manufacturer in the history of the DTM had succeeded in this before.

In 2010 Scheider stayed with Abt Sportsline. While he always scored points in the first five races, but was not on the podium, he finished five of the last six races on the podium and won one. As the best Audi driver, he finished fourth in the championship this season. He also made his debut in 2010 at the Le Mans 24-hour race in a Porsche 997 GT3 RSR , which was used by BMS Scuderia Italia . In 2011 Scheider contested his eleventh DTM season and his fifth for Abt Sportsline. With a second place as the best result, he ended the year in fourth place overall. He also took part in a race in the Blancpain Endurance Series in 2011 , winning the GT3 Pro classification. He also came third in the Nürburgring 24h race. In the 2012 DTM season , Scheider received an Audi A5 DTM that was used by Abt Sportline. Although Scheider drove a fastest race lap and achieved a pole position, he did not manage to place on the podium. It was the first season in his time at Abt that he was without a podium finish. Two sixth places were his best results. At the end of the season he was in 14th place in the drivers' championship. In 2013 Scheider competed for Abt in the DTM again. With a third place as the best result, he finished the season in tenth overall.

In 2014 Scheider returned to Phoenix Racing, which meanwhile also used Audis. With a third place as the best result, he was ninth in the drivers' championship. In 2015 Scheider stayed with Phoenix Racing in the DTM. He chose 10 as his starting number. Scheider was disqualified at the second Spielberg race. Scheider was first overtaken by Pascal Wehrlein after he had followed Wehrlein's slower-moving brand colleague Robert Wickens . Before the next bend, Scheider braked later than Wickens and pushed Wickens into Wehrlein. Both drivers retired, while Scheider crossed the finish line in sixth. The race stewards saw Scheider to be responsible for this incident and disqualified him. Shortly before the incident, Audi Motorsport Director Wolfgang Ullrich could be heard over Scheider's pit radio , who radioed the instruction "Timo, push him out". As a result of the collision, the German Motor Sport Association blocked Scheider for two races in Wolokolamsk , Audi was deprived of 62 points from the race in Spielberg for the brand classification and fined € 200,000. The behavior of the team and the driver had "massively [damaged] the public image of motorsport". Scheider was represented by Antonio Giovinazzi during his suspension . After returning, he won a race in Hockenheim. He finished the season in 18th place overall.

The DTM season in 2016 graduated Scheider again for Phoenix. A sixth place was his best result and as the worst regular Audi driver he finished 22nd in the drivers' standings. One day before the last race weekend, Scheider found out by telephone that Audi would no longer extend its contract, which was due to expire at the end of the year. Scheider then ended his DTM career after 16 seasons.
