He competed in the DTM from 2012 to 2017 , with fourth place overall in 2016 being his best result. In 2018 he started in the IndyCar series , but had to end the season due to a spinal cord injury after an accident in August.

Career

Wickens began his career in karting in 1999 , which he practiced until 2005. In addition, Wickens made his formula racing debut in the US Formula BMW in 2005 . Wickens immediately came third in the overall standings. The following season, Wickens won the US Formula BMW championship. Wickens also contested two races each in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and the German Formula BMW. In 2007, Wickens started for Forsythe Racing in the Atlantic Championship and finished third in the championship. In addition, Wickens competed for Carlin Motorsport in some Formula Renault 3.5 races .

In the following 2007/2008 A1GP season , Wickens started for the Canadian A1GP team in seven out of ten races. Wickens achieved a total of five podium finishes and won the sprint race in Durban . In the overall standings, the Canadian team finished ninth overall. In 2008, Wickens was active both for Carlin Motorsport in Formula Renault 3.5 and for Signature Plus in the Formula 3 Euro Series . Although he won a race in both series, he was not placed in the top ten drivers in either series.

In 2009 , Wickens competed in the revived Formula 2 . With a double victory at the first round in Valencia he made a good debut in Formula 2. Without another win, he secured the runner-up title behind Andy Souček at the end of the season . He also competed on two racing weekends in the Formula 3 Euro Series and on one racing weekend each in the British Formula 3 Championship and the Atlantic Championship. With the end of the 2009 season, the support of Red Bull , which had supported him since 2006, ended. In 2010 , Wickens switched to the newly founded GP3 series for the Irish racing team Status Grand Prix . With a second place at the season opener, Wickens started the season well. At the end of the season he was runner-up behind Esteban Gutiérrez with three wins .

Robert Wickens for Carlin in the Formula Renault 3.5 at Le Castellet

In 2011 , Wickens returned to Carlin in Formula Renault 3.5. He won one race each at Spa-Francorchamps , the Nürburgring and Barcelona, and won both races at Silverstone . Wickens went into the last race as overall leader in the duel with his teammate Jean-Éric Vergne . The two pilots touched in the start phase in the second corner, with Wickens' suspension breaking. In the further course of the race Vergne also retired, whereby Wickens won the championship title with 241 to 232 points ahead of Vergne. In addition, at the beginning of June he was signed by the Formula 1 team Virgin as a test driver. In this role he was used in free practice at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix . In addition, as a reward for winning the title in Formula Renault 3.5, he received a Formula 1 test at Renault .

In 2012 , Wickens decided to switch to the DTM . He received a cockpit at Mücke Motorsport . In the race at the Norisring , he scored points for the first time with a ninth place. One race later at the Nürburgring, he improved his best DTM result with seventh place. At the end of the season he was in 16th place overall. In 2013 , Wickens moved to HWA within the Mercedes DTM teams . In the second race at Brands Hatch , he achieved his first DTM podium with a third place. He started from pole position for the first time at the Norisring. He finished second in the race. Since Mattias Ekström , who had crossed the finish line before him, had been disqualified, Wickens was the best-placed driver in the race. The first place was not reassigned. Two races later, Wickens won his first DTM race at the Nürburgring. He finished the season as the second best Mercedes driver in fifth place overall. In 2014 , Wickens stayed with HWA in the DTM. After three races without points, he won the fourth race at the Norisring starting from pole position. In Spielberg , Wickens started the race again from pole position. In the race, he received a drive-through penalty for an unsafe clearance after the pit stop. Since his team did not inform him of the penalty and he accordingly did not complete it, he was disqualified. Wickens was twelfth overall at the end of the season. In 2015 , Wickens contested his fourth DTM season for HWA. He chose 6 as his starting number. After finishing second in the first race at the Norisring, he won the second race. He finished the season in 13th place overall.

In the DTM season in 2016 Wickens was again at HWA. He won the first race in Zandvoort and Wolokolamsk . As the best Mercedes driver, he finished the drivers' standings in fourth place.

In 2017 he completed his last DTM season and his best result was a victory at the Nürburgring . In the overall standings, he finished ninth, making him the second best Mercedes driver after Lucas Auer .

In 2018, Wickens returned to formula racing and competed for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports in the North American IndyCar series . At the first race in St. Petersburg he started from first place and led most of the laps. Two laps before the end of the race, however, he was in the lead after a failed attempt by Alexander Rossi to overtake .

On August 19, 2018, he had a serious accident in the ABC Supply 500 Indycar race at Pocono Raceway in the state of Pennsylvania . He suffered a spinal cord injury that initially confines him to a wheelchair, but is not paraplegic. Although Wickens was unable to take part in the last three races of the season due to his injuries, he won the title of Rookie of the Year . His convalescence is still ongoing.
