The Valencia Street Circuit is a temporary motorsport racetrack in the port area of the Spanish provincial capital, Valencia . On the street circuit took place from 2008 bis 2012 the European Grand Prix of Formula 1 instead.
history
Though it with the Ricardo Tormo circuit in around 20 km from the suburb of Cheste is already a race track - which is used primarily for motorcycle racing and winter testing Formula 1 - was an agreement between on 1 June 2007 Bernie Ecclestone and the Valmor Sport Group completed which was to be valid for seven years and included a race through the port area of Valencia. The reconstruction of the racetrack began in October 2007. After an eight-month construction period, construction work was completed in June 2008. Since the transport infrastructure around the port area had already been expanded for the 32nd America's Cup in 2007, only space had to be created for the temporary grandstands.
The official route was presented on July 19, 2007 by the Valencian Transport Minister. The route is 5.419 km long and has a total of 25 turns - 11 right and 14 left turns. A maximum speed of just over 320 km / h, an average speed of around 200 km / h (for comparison: the average in Monaco is almost 160 km / h) and a lap time of around 1:37 minutes was calculated.
A test event on the new course took place in July 2008. The Spanish Formula 3 and the International GT Open drove on the track. The event was used as a test of the processes at an event and to check the safety of the route. According to the organizers, the test was successful. The FIA then approved the course.
No Formula 1 races have been held in Valencia since 2013. "We cannot maintain Formula 1 car races because we have different priorities when it comes to using state funds," said Alberto Fabra, head of the regional government. According to Fabra, the proposal of an annual change between Valencia and Barcelona as the host of the Spanish Grand Prix failed due to objections from the government in Catalonia. Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone waived in negotiations with the government on a fine of 54 million euros, which were actually due in the event of an early contract exit. However, Valencia had to cede certain materials that were used to prepare the race course to the World Cup organizers.
