Bahrain International Circuit is the name of a motorsport race in Bahrain , the inaugural for the 2004 Bahrain Grand Prix of Formula 1 was built. It is located to the southwest in as-Sachir, around 27 kilometers from the center of the capital Manama .

Emergence

The construction of the racing facility was of national interest in Bahrain. The project was supported by Sheikh Salman ibn Hamad ibn Isa Al Chalifa , the Crown Prince of Bahrain, who is a motorsport enthusiast . At the same time, the Crown Prince is also the President of the Bahrain Motor Federation . Martin Whitaker is the managing director of the course.

When the racetrack was not yet completely finished in early 2004, the organizers feared that the Bahrain Grand Prix could not be held until 2005. Ultimately, by the time of the race in April 2004, which took place after non-stop work, not everything was finished, but the track was cleared for the race.

Route description

A unique problem of this track is the solitary location in the middle of the desert. It can happen that there is sand on the racetrack due to wind drifts, which could lead to racing interruptions. To counteract this, a special spray is sprayed onto the sand around the track, but this is not a solution against entries from more distant sources. In 2007, however, the huge run- off zones made of sand were replaced by a sand-colored layer of asphalt, which causes less damage to the vehicles than the usual layer of gravel. Special air filters are also used in Bahrain to protect the engines from the sand.

The Bahrain International Circuit was planned and designed by the German civil engineer and race track specialist Hermann Tilke . The construction cost 150 million euros .

The length of the racetrack is 5.412 km. The maximum gradient is 3.6%, the maximum gradient 5.6%. The start-finish straight is 1090 m long, the pit lane 417.9 m. The track has 14 curves, six of which are left and eight right. There is also a 3.596 km “paddock” version, which is mostly used for races in other racing series.

The 2010 Formula 1 World Championship opened on March 14th at the Bahrain International Circuit. With this race, the track layout has been changed, which now includes a new loop after Turn 4, which was completed in 2006. It consists of a fast right-hand bend, a complex of five further bends, as well as a left bend and a hairpin bend, which ultimately leads back to the original route. The extension of the route was justified with the increase in the number of participants to 26.

In the 2011 Formula 1 World Championship , however, the original and shorter route variant should be used again. On February 21, 2011, the original opening race of the 2011 season was canceled due to political unrest . In 2014, curve 1 was named the Michael Schumacher curve .
