The 2014 Formula 1 World Championship was the 65th season of the Formula 1 World Championship. It again comprised 19 grands prix. It began on March 16 in Melbourne, Australia and ended on November 23 on Yas Island off Abu Dhabi . The Briton Lewis Hamilton became world driver champion for the second time since 2008. With Mercedes, a German racing team won the constructors' world championship for the first time since the title was awarded in 1958.
Changes 2014
Racetracks
The Russian Grand Prix was held for the first time in 2014 and took place in Sochi .
The Austrian Grand Prix ( Spielberg ) returned to the racing calendar. The German Grand Prix switched regularly from the Nürburgring to the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg .
The Indian Grand Prix and the Korean Grand Prix have been removed from the calendar.
In the meantime, the Jersey ( Weehawken ) and Mexico ( Mexico City ) Grand Prix were also planned for the 2014 season. Both races were not included in the final calendar.
Technical regulations
drive
From the 2014 season onwards, V6 turbo engines with 1.6 liter displacement will be used, replacing the 2.4 liter V8 engines used since 2006 . The cylinder bank angle is 90 °. The maximum fuel flow is limited to 100 kg / h and the fuel consumption per race is limited to 100 kg. As a result, a reduction in the sound pressure level of the engines from 145 dB (V8) to 134 dB (V6) was expected.
The engines are homologated until the end of the 2020 season . Each engine manufacturer can equip up to four teams with engines. Since the development of the new engines is extremely expensive, engine manufacturer Cosworth decided not to develop a V6 engine and thus to withdraw from Formula 1 at the end of the 2013 season.
An Energy Recovery System replaces the KERS , which until now only had an electromotive brake . The ERS consists of the previous kinetic energy recovery (ERS-K) and is supplemented by an additional system ( ERS-H ) that uses waste heat from the engine via the turbocharger to generate energy and also charges the batteries. The entire ERS may release a maximum of 4 MJ per lap - ten times more than the previous 400 kJ. In accordance with the limitation of the total output of the ERS to 120 kW (~ 163 PS) and the maximum energy output of 4 MJ per lap, the duration of use is increased to about 33 seconds. Since the now even more powerful ERS-K requires constant adjustment of the brake balance, the teams are allowed to use electronic brake controls for the rear wheels.
Renault announced that it would use a generator on the turbocharger shaft to generate energy for the engine for the 2014 season, which will be used both to accelerate the vehicle and to accelerate the turbocharger shaft in order to overcome the turbo lag until full torque begins.
An engine unit is divided into six different modules: In addition to the combustion engine itself, these are the two generators MGU-K and MGU-H, the energy storage device, the turbocharger and the control electronics. Five copies of each of these six modules may be used in the course of a season. If a driver needs another copy of a module during a season, he will be moved ten places back on the grid for the next race. Each further use of a sixth copy then only results in a five-place move back. When replacing all six modules, the vehicle has to start out of the pit lane in the next race. If a driver is moved back on the starting grid because of this, but there are fewer starting positions behind him than the penalty is, the remaining starting positions will be moved back in the next race.
A transmission has to survive six race weekends from the 2014 season. This extended the life of a transmission by one Grand Prix. The number of forward gears is increased from seven to eight. The translation may no longer be changed during the season.
Minimum weight
Since the new engine units are heavier, the total weight of the vehicles including the driver has been increased by 48 kg to 690 kg. However, the engine units are heavier than originally expected, so that the heaviest drivers have to reduce their weight so that they are not above the minimum weight together with the vehicle and are competitive. This caused massive criticism in the run-up to the 2014 season. Before the first race of the season, Nico Rosberg said: The regulations are so aggressive that no team will make it to the minimum weight with their car, everyone will be higher. That's why the driver has to be as light as possible.
For the 2015 season it was decided to raise the weight limit by a further 10 kg to 700 kg. The introduction of the increased minimum weight for the 2014 season was also discussed, but the approval of all eleven teams required for a rule change was not achieved. This was sharply criticized by several drivers and officials, also with reference to health risks for the pilots.
In order to reduce their weight, some drivers in the starting field are supposed to deliberately drink too little. For weight reasons, Sauber also dispenses with a drinking bottle in the vehicle. After the Australian Grand Prix , Jean-Éric Vergne had to be treated in hospital because he had become weak and dehydrated .
In January 2014 it was announced that, in consideration of the heavier Pirelli tires, the minimum weight for the 2014 season will be increased from 690 to 691 kg and for the 2015 season from 700 to 701 kg.
aerodynamics
Instead of the previous 550 mm, the tip of the vehicle nose may only be a maximum of 185 mm above the ground, i.e. hardly higher than the front wing. Formula 1 is thus returning to the deep noses that were common until the mid-1990s. In addition, the width of the front wing is reduced from 180 cm to 165 cm. The height of the monocoque is also reduced. The maximum height remains at 625 mm, but this height may no longer be maintained over the entire length, at the transition to the vehicle nose the maximum height is now 525 mm.
Only a single exhaust tailpipe is provided, which is positioned in such a way that the exhaust gases can no longer blow into the rear diffuser and thus generate downforce.
The wind tunnel hours and CFD calculations will be reduced for the 2014 season for cost reasons, over a period of eight weeks a maximum of 30 units per week on average are allowed. One unit represents either one hour in the wind tunnel or 1.0 TeraFLOPS for CFD calculations. The crash structures on the vehicle side are also standardized for reasons of cost.
In the run-up to the German Grand Prix , the FIA informed the teams that the FRIC system would be interpreted as a movable, aerodynamic aid with immediate effect and thus violate Article 3.15 of the Technical Regulations.
Sporting regulations
The test drives during the season, which have been banned since 2008, are allowed again to a limited extent from 2014. In Europe, after four races, there will be two test days in the following week. Along with the introduction of these eight test days, the Young Driver Days and test drives for PR purposes will be abolished. Each team must also have a day of testing during the season exclusively for testing new tires and, after the last race of the season, a day for testing new tires for the 2015 season.
The speed limit in the pit lane will be modified for safety reasons. The maximum speed is 60 km / h in Melbourne, Monaco and Singapore, and 80 km / h on all racetracks. As of 2014, all pit crew members must also wear helmets to increase safety. This now also applies to qualifying. After Mark Webber in the Grand Prix of Germany 2013 lost immediately after a pit stop only inadequately fastened right rear wheel and a cameraman taken had the will then be admitted to a hospital had to, these rules were introduced during the season-2013.
From 2014, drivers will be cautioned with points for offenses on the racetrack. Depending on the severity of the incident, there are one to three points. Each point is deleted after one year. If a driver has accumulated twelve penalty points at a time, his point account is reset and he is blocked for the next Grand Prix. A five-second time penalty will also be introduced. This must be served at the next pit stop, the vehicle must stand still in the pit for five seconds before any work can be done on it. If no further pit stop is planned, the driver will be added five seconds to the total time. This penalty is intended to punish small offenses such as exceeding the speed limit in the pit lane for which a drive-through penalty would be unreasonably severe.
Drivers are no longer allowed to park their car on the route without a justified reason. In the past, it happened repeatedly that vehicles were parked on the run-out lap after crossing the finish line in order to save fuel for the fuel sample to be taken after the race.
In the last race, starting with the 2014 season, twice as many points will be awarded for each placement than usual. This is the first time that a race will be held in the Formula 1 World Championship in which the point system is different from that of all other races of the season.
Starting with the 2014 season, drivers will keep their starting numbers for several seasons. The numbers from 2 to 99 can be freely selected by the drivers. If two drivers choose the same number, the one who was best placed in the previous championship has priority. The number 1 is reserved for the world champion. However, the world champion does not have to dial this number. The start number must not only be on the vehicle, but also clearly visible on the driver's helmet.
The original plan was to award additional World Championship points to the driver who achieved the pole position. Instead, at the end of a season, the driver who has achieved the most pole positions is presented with a specially created trophy, the so-called Pole Position Award .
Drivers who do not have a super license must have a green rear light on the rear of their vehicle, which must always light up while driving. This should allow other drivers to recognize that the pilot is inexperienced.
Every driver who reaches the second section of qualifying will be provided with an additional set of tires in the softer of the two compounds used on the race weekend. Drivers who reach the third qualifying section must use it there and then return it to Pirelli. They have to start the race on the set of tires with which they set their fastest lap time in the second segment. At the same time, the length of the first section will be changed from 20 to 18 minutes and the third section from ten to twelve minutes.
In the run-up to the Singapore Grand Prix , the FIA informed the teams that no radio conversation from the pits to the driver should contain any information relating to the performance of the car or the driver. Previously, drivers had repeatedly received data from their engineers on various technical settings or sector times from competitors (so-called " coaching "). No rule change was necessary for this, only Article 20.1 of the sporting regulations, which states that the driver must drive the car alone and without outside help, is interpreted much more narrowly. This was a response to criticism that the box radio published on TV broadcasts is damaging the image of Formula 1.
Teams
Eleven teams signed up for the 2014 Formula 1 season, each bringing two cars to the start. There was a change of engine supplier for three teams: Marussia , the only team that competed with Cosworth engines in 2013, signed a long-term contract with Ferrari . The previous Ferrari customer team Toro Rosso switched to Renault and Williams from Renault to Mercedes.
Some teams suffered significant economic difficulties over the course of the year, which led to discussions about sporting policy after two racing teams went bankrupt before the end of the season.
Caterham and Marussia bankruptcies
The economic difficulties of many teams intensified in the second half of the season. After the Russian Grand Prix in October, Marussia went bankrupt and filed for bankruptcy protection. A week before Marussia, Caterham had already ceased racing after a takeover of the team announced in early summer of that year had failed and a supplier to the racing team had become insolvent. As a result, neither Marussia nor Caterham took part in the US Grand Prix , and the racing teams were also absent from the Brazilian Grand Prix . One week before the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix , Caterham surprisingly announced that it would take part in this final race of the season after the team had raised the necessary funds through crowdfunding through donations from motorsport fans. On the Wednesday before the race in Abu Dhabi, the insolvency administrator Marussias then tried to get the team to start there. The aim was to defend Marussia's ninth place in the constructors' world championship and to receive the right to the associated proceeds from the exploitation of rights in order to raise additional funds to satisfy the creditors. However, Marussia's very short-term attempt failed on the same day after the insolvency administrator (unlike the Caterhams) failed to raise the funds necessary for a trip to Abu Dhabi.
Dispute over the distribution of funds
The financially troubled teams in 2014 also included Sauber and Lotus . Both of them have had multiple reports of financial difficulties since mid-2013. In the course of 2014, Force India is said to have repeatedly met its payment obligations late, for example to engine supplier Mercedes.
The main reason for the economic difficulties was cited as the cost of engines and drive units, which had risen significantly after the new version of the regulations.
After the bankruptcy of Caterham and Marussia, the demands of these teams for a different, less favorable distribution of the rightsholder's income, became louder. According to several reports, Force India, Lotus and Sauber threatened with a - ultimately unrealized - boycott of the US Grand Prix. Bernie Ecclestone , responsible for marketing Formula 1 , who had previously seen no need for changes, then publicly stated that he believed the current distribution of revenue to be flawed. However, there was no short-term solution.
driver
Before the season
Kimi Raikkonen returns to Scuderia Ferrari . Raikkonen drove for the racing team from 2007 to 2009 and won the 2007 world championship in a Ferrari. Raikkonen received a two-year contract. In 2012 and 2013 Räikkönen drove for Lotus .

Sergio Pérez left McLaren after one season and moved to Force India.
Kamui Kobayashi returns to Formula 1 with Caterham . In 2013 he drove in the GTE Pro class of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) for the Ferrari factory team AF Corse . He finished seventh in the GT drivers' World Cup.
Daniil Kwjat from Russia will make his Formula 1 debut at Toro Rosso in 2014 . Kwjat started in 2013 in the GP3 series for MW Arden . The Dane Kevin Magnussen is the second newcomer to enter Formula 1. He was given a cockpit at McLaren . Magnussen won the Formula Renault 3.5 championship title with DAMS in 2013 . Third debutant is the Swede Marcus Ericsson , who achieved sixth place overall in the GP2 series with DAMS in 2013 and who competes for Caterham in 2014 .
Giedo van der Garde , who was a regular driver at Caterham in 2013 , switched to Sauber as a test driver .
Charles Pic , previously also a regular driver at Caterham , switched to Lotus and became a test and reserve driver there.
In June 2013, Mark Webber announced that he would switch to the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) as a works driver for Porsche in 2014 . He drove for Red Bull in 2013 .
Paul di Resta , who worked for Force India in 2013 , left Formula 1 and returned to Mercedes in the DTM .
Heikki Kovalainen , who competed in two races for Lotus in 2013, did not find a racing cockpit in 2014.
During the season
For the Belgian Grand Prix , Caterham replaced Kamui Kobayashi with André Lotterer . Lotterer is actually a pilot for Audi Sport Team Joest in the FIA World Endurance Championship and for TOM’S in Super Formula . He received approval for a one-time Formula 1 participation and made his Formula 1 debut.
After Jules Bianchi was seriously injured at the Japanese Grand Prix , Marussia replacement pilot Alexander Rossi was given the cockpit for the Russian Grand Prix . However, Marussia withdrew his report on Friday. It would have been his Formula 1 debut. He last raced for Campos in the GP2 series in 2014 .
For the last race of the season in Abu Dhabi , Will Stevens will receive the Caterham cockpit from Marcus Ericsson , who had terminated his contract prior to the Grand Prix. Stevens had been active for Strakka Racing in the Formula Renault 3.5 in the 2014 season and had achieved sixth place overall.
tires
In 2014, drivers will receive an additional set of tires for the first half hour of the first free practice session.
Pirelli remained the tire supplier for the 2014 season . The contract was only signed in January 2014 and will run until 2016. Pirelli had previously signed contracts with all eleven teams and the Formula One Administration (FOA) for the 2014 season, but the final decision was in the hands of the FIA. This had originally undertaken to carry out a new tender after the contract with Pirelli, which ran until the end of the 2013 season, had expired . Notwithstanding this, Pirelli held a tire test in Bahrain from December 17-19, 2013 , in which Red Bull, Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren, Force India and Toro Rosso took part with their 2013 cars.
Teams and drivers
The overview below lists all drivers who were registered as regular drivers for races during the season, who took part in official test drives or who had signed a contract as test drivers. The teams are arranged according to the 2013 constructors' championship. The teams occupied the pit lane at the Grands Prix in this order. The drivers of a team are also sorted in the table according to the pit lane arrangement. The first vehicle of a team drove black, the second vehicle with a yellow camera marking on the roll bar. The engine and transmission contingents were tied to the vehicles.

Season preparation
28–31 January: Circuito de Jerez
The first week of testing took place from January 28th to 31st at the Circuito de Jerez in Spain. There were ten with the Caterham CT05 , the Ferrari F14 T , the Force India VJM07 , the Marussia MR03 , the McLaren MP4-29 , the Mercedes F1 W05 Hybrid , the Red Bull RB10 , the Sauber C33 , the Toro Rosso STR9 and the Williams FW36 Boliden made their track debut. Lotus decided not to take part in these test drives because the E22 was not completed on time. Marussia did not arrive until January 29th and was only able to take part in the test drives from January 30th.
At the start of the test on January 28th, Kimi Raikkonen was the fastest driver in a Ferrari with a time of 1: 27.104 minutes ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas . As expected, there were many problems with the new vehicles, especially in the area of the completely new drivetrains. All in all, all vehicles only covered 93 laps. Hamilton lost control of his car due to a defective front wing, hit a stack of tires and was only able to take part in the test drives again the next day. Jenson Button didn't drive at all in the McLaren due to problems with the electrical system on the first day of the test, while Marcus Ericsson in the Caterham only managed one installation lap. Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull took to the track just a few minutes before the end of the first day of testing and only drove three installation laps after a mechanic installed a coil spring on the rear axle the wrong way round when assembling the car on the night of January 28th.
On January 29, 2014 Button set the fastest time in 1: 24.165 minutes ahead of Raikkonen and Bottas. After it had rained during the night, the track was wet and was also artificially watered to create the right rain conditions for testing the new Pirelli rain tires. However, around noon it gradually dried off. Nico Rosberg was able to drive the longest distance by far with 97 laps, Vettel only got eight laps due to problems with the ERS .
On January 30, 2014, Kevin Magnussen was fastest in 1: 23.276 minutes ahead of Felipe Massa and Hamilton. In the afternoon Max Chilton shot five installation rounds for the first time in the Marussia. With 92 laps, McLaren drove the greatest distance on day three of the test, Button 40 in the morning and Magnussen 52 in the afternoon. Daniel Ricciardo was only able to drive three laps in the Red Bull due to technical problems.
On the last day of the test, the best time with 1: 28.229 minutes went to Massa ahead of Fernando Alonso and Daniel Juncadella in Force India . As on the second day of the test, the track was wet and only dried off towards the end. In the morning Rosberg succeeded for the first time in driving a complete racing simulation. In the afternoon, team-mate Hamilton took over the car again, with 132 laps Mercedes covered the greatest distance of the day. The driver with the most laps achieved was Alonso, who completed 115 laps, just ahead of Magnussen, who completed 110 laps but spun off the track twice in the process. Although openings had been cut in the side pods of the car in order to achieve better cooling, there were again technical problems at Red Bull. The team stopped the test drives around noon, Ricciardo had only driven seven laps by this time.
Marcus Ericsson, Nico Hülkenberg , Daniel Juncadella, Kamui Kobayashi , Daniil Kwjat , Kevin Magnussen, Felipe Massa, Sergio Pérez , Kimi Räikkönen, Daniel Ricciardo and Adrian Sutil completed the first test drives for their new teams in Jerez.
19. – 22. February: Bahrain International Circuit
The second week of testing took place from February 19th to 22nd at the Bahrain International Circuit in as-Sachir . After the Lotus E22 was completed, all eleven teams took part in the test drives for the first time this season.
On February 19, Nico Hülkenberg set the fastest time with 1: 36.880 minutes ahead of Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton . Adrian Sutil drove the longest distance in the Sauber with 82 laps, just ahead of Kevin Magnussen (81 laps) and Hülkenberg (78 laps). Hamilton (74 laps), Robin Frijns (68 laps) and Alonso (64 laps) also managed to cover more than a complete race distance. Romain Grosjean was the first to set out in the Lotus early in the morning, but only completed eight laps due to problems with the software and the batteries. At Red Bull there were again problems with the cooling, here too the mechanics tried to achieve better cooling with additional openings carved into the side pods. Nevertheless, Sebastian Vettel only drove 14 laps. There were also technical problems with Williams , Toro Rosso and Marussia , so that Felipe Massa and Daniil Kwjat only managed five laps each, Jules Bianchi only managed three laps.
Magnussen set the best time on February 20 in 1: 34.910 minutes ahead of Hülkenberg and Alonso. In good external conditions, Valtteri Bottas drove 115 laps, by far the longest route on that day, which was more than 600 kilometers. But Alonso and Nico Rosberg were also able to drive significantly more than a complete race distance. At Marussia there were problems with the fuel pressure, so that Max Chilton drove the shortest distance with 17 laps that day. Lotus also suffered from technical problems, so that Grosjean could only cover 18 laps.
On February 21, Hamilton was fastest with a lap time of 1: 34.263 minutes, followed by Jenson Button and Massa. As on the day before, the Williams team was able to drive the longest distance with 115 laps, Bottas drove 55 laps in the morning and Massa 60 laps in the afternoon. Button was the driver with the most laps with 103 laps, just ahead of Marcus Ericsson with 98 and Esteban Gutiérrez with 96 laps. Ericsson covered the distance of 300 kilometers necessary for the issuance of his super license . On the other hand, there were problems again at Marussia, Chilton had to park the car after less than an hour and only four laps with engine failure and did not turn another lap during the day. Pastor Maldonado stayed on the track twice in the Lotus and achieved a total of 26 laps, Daniel Ricciardo also only drove a relatively short distance with 28 laps.
The fastest driver on the last day of the test week was Rosberg with a time of 1: 33.283 minutes ahead of Button and Kimi Raikkonen . Rosberg was less than a second slower than his pole position at the 2013 Bahrain Grand Prix after it was feared after the tests in Jerez that the changes in the regulations would mean that the Formula 1 vehicles would no longer be faster than vehicles from the GP2 series or the WEC . Rosberg also drove the longest distance of the day with 89 laps, closely followed by Felipe Nasr in the Williams (87 laps) and Raikkonen (82 laps), who got off the track with his car shortly before the end of the test drives and hit the guardrails . In his first test drives with a Formula 1 vehicle, Nasr covered the 300 kilometers necessary for the granting of the super license. On the other hand, there were technical problems at Marussia and Sauber, Bianchi was again only able to drive five laps due to problems with the fuel supply and Sutil, who did not take to the track until late afternoon, only seven laps. There were also difficulties again at Toro Rosso and Red Bull, with Jean-Éric Vergne only driving nine laps and Ricciardo 15 laps.
Robin Frijns, Pastor Maldonado and Felipe Nasr completed the first test drives for their new teams in Bahrain.
February 27–2. March: Bahrain International Circuit
The third and last week of testing before the season took place again from February 27th to March 2nd at the Bahrain International Circuit in as-Sachir .
On the first day of testing, Sergio Pérez was fastest with a lap time of 1: 35.290 minutes ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Räikkönen . Bottas drove the longest distance with 128 laps, followed by Kevin Magnussen with 109 and Pérez with 105 laps. There were still problems at Caterham , Kamui Kobayashi only completed 19 laps due to problems with the electronics and software of the Renault powertrain and was also the slowest driver of the day. Pastor Maldonado was only a little faster and covered only a very short distance with 31 laps. His Lotus E22 was equipped with 120 new parts, but the team had to abort the test prematurely after a break in the exhaust. Max Chilton in the Marussia MR03 was able to drive 44 laps that day, more than in the entire second week of testing.
On February 28, Pérez was again fastest, this time with a lap time of 1: 35.570 minutes ahead of Fernando Alonso and Daniel Ricciardo . Alonso covered the greatest distance with 126 laps, followed by Pérez with 108 and Esteban Gutiérrez with 106 laps. Maldonado was able to cover 31 laps, just like the day before, so he achieved the fewest kilometers on that day. Things went a little better for Jenson Button and Marcus Ericsson , who completed 52 and 55 laps respectively. Maldonado had to park the car in the rear area after a fire, Button rolled out in the morning with transmission problems, the repair of his vehicle took four hours.
Felipe Massa set the best time on March 1st in 1: 33.258 minutes ahead of Nico Rosberg and Raikkonen. Massa achieved the fastest lap time to date with a vehicle of the 2014 season. Ericsson covered the longest distance with 117 laps, which was the first time a vehicle with a Renault engine was able to do this in the preseason tests. Nico Hülkenberg drove 115 laps, Rosberg (103 laps) and Massa (99 laps) also drove almost the whole day without any technical problems. Sebastian Vettel and Adrian Sutil did not drive a single lap , Vettel was sent onto the track twice in the Red Bull RB10 , but initially stopped after a few corners and on the second attempt at the end of the pit lane. Sutil initially came back from his installation round with a smoking rear end, but then had to park his Sauber C33 shortly after entering the pit lane when the car caught fire in the rear area. Also Romain Grosjean drove only 33 laps, at first he could not go out on the track due to an electronics problem, and later he had to because of a defect on the ERS cancel the test drives.
On March 2nd, Lewis Hamilton was the fastest with a fastest time of 1: 33.278 minutes ahead of Bottas and Alonso. Sauber drove the most laps, where Sutil drove 91 laps in the morning and Gutiérrez did 86 laps in the afternoon. The driver with the greatest distance of the day was Bottas with 108 laps, followed by Kobayashi with 106 laps and the two Sauber drivers. Button was able to cover the fewest laps (22) due to an engine failure, Grosjean managed only 32 laps with two technical defects.
