Marcus Ericsson (born September 2, 1990 in Kumla ) is a Swedish automobile racing driver . In 2009 he won the Japanese Formula 3 championship . He drove in the GP2 series from 2010 to 2013 . His best overall placement was sixth in 2013. Ericsson competed in Formula 1 from 2014 to 2018 . From 2015 he competed for Sauber . He has been part of the IndyCar Series since 2019 .

Career

Beginnings in motorsport (1999–2009)

Ericsson began his motorsport career in 1999 in karting , which he practiced until 2006. In his last year in karting, the Swedish racing driver Kenny Bräck became aware of Ericsson, who supported him from then on. In 2007 he switched to formula racing . At the age of 16, he won the British Formula BMW championship title in his first season . He won seven out of 18 races. In 2008 Ericsson competed in the British Formula 3 championship . Although he did not win a race, he was on the podium five times and was fifth overall at the end of the season. In 2009 Ericsson switched to the Japanese Formula 3 championship and won the drivers' championship title straight away. He also started in four races of the British Formula 3 Championship, of which he won two.

GP2 series (2009-2013)

After winning the championship, Ericsson competed for ART Grand Prix on the first race weekend of the GP2 Asia Series season 2009/2010 . He also completed Formula 1 test drives for Brawn GP in December 2009 . For the second race weekend of the GP2 Asia series , he switched to Super Nova Racing . Then Ericsson did not appear again and finally finished 24th overall. For Super Nova Racing, Ericsson took part in the European main series of GP2 in 2010 as a team-mate of Josef Král . After scoring his first points in the GP2 series in the main race on the fourth race weekend in Valencia , his first victory in this championship followed a day later in the sprint race. Ericsson, who only scored in one other race, finished 17th overall at the end of the season. In 2011 he competed in the GP2 Asia and GP2 series for iSport International . The GP2 Asia Series concluded Ericsson with a third place as best result in sixth place overall from. In the GP2 series , he safely led the main race on the Hungaroring . However, since his team had let go of him too early during the pit stop and he almost collided with an opponent, the race management gave him a drive-through penalty, which made him finish in fifth place. Ericsson finished the season with two third places as the best results in tenth place overall. After the season he also took part in the 2011 GP2 Final . He finished second behind Fabio Leimer .

For the 2012 season, Ericsson was again under contract with iSport International. After only occasionally scoring points in the first three quarters of the season and finishing second twice, he scooped the points in every race in the last quarter of the season, was on the podium three times and won the main race at Spa-Francorchamps . In the driver standings, Ericsson finished eighth with 124 points. With that he prevailed internally against Jolyon Palmer , who had scored 78 points. In 2013 , Ericsson moved to DAMS , the preseason championship team. After he had achieved pole position twice in the first nine races, but remained without points in the races and did not make it into the top 10, he scored his first point in the tenth race. One race later at the Nürburgring, he won his first win of the season in the main race. At the next two events on the Hungaroring and in Spa-Francorchamps he finished second in the main race. Ericsson made it onto the podium five times during the season. With 121 to 103 points, he decided the team-internal duel against Stéphane Richelmi for himself and finished the season in sixth place overall.

Formula 1 (2014-2018)

In 2014 , Ericsson received a Formula 1 cockpit from Caterham and chose # 9 as his Formula 1 starting number. At the Monaco Grand Prix he achieved his best result to date with eleventh place. At the US Grand Prix , Caterham did not appear due to financial problems. Ericsson then dissolved his contract with Caterham. He finished the season in 19th place overall. In 2015 , Ericsson moved to Sauber within Formula 1 . At the start of the season in Australia he scored his first points in the Formula 1 World Championship in eighth place. It was his best result of the season. Internally he was defeated by Felipe Nasr with 9 to 27 points and was 18th in the drivers' championship.

Ericsson and Nasr stayed with Sauber in 2016 . In July 2016 it was announced that the Sauber team would be taken over by the Swiss investment company Longbow Finance SA , whose president and managing director is close to the Tetra Laval Group . This has supported Ericsson's career financially for years without appearing in public. Although Ericsson prevailed after placements with 12 to 8 against Nasr, in contrast to Nasr, who scored two points, he remained without points. At the end of the season he was 22nd overall. In the 2017 Formula 1 World Championship , Ericsson drove for Sauber again. At the end of the season he finished 20th in the overall ranking. In 2018 Ericsson competed for Sauber again. At the end of the season he was 17th in the drivers' championship.

IndyCar series (since 2019)

Ericsson has been driving in the IndyCar Series since 2019 . He replaced the cockpit of the crashed driver Robert Wickens at Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. He is also a substitute driver for the Sauber F1 Team in Formula 1 . For the 2020 season he switched to Chip Ganassi Racing .
