Fabio Leimer (born April 17, 1989 in Rothrist ) is a Swiss automobile racing driver . In 2009 he won the title of the international Formula Master . He started in the GP2 series from 2010 to 2013 and won the 2013 championship for Racing Engineering . In 2014 he competed in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).

Career

After Leimer started his career in karting in 2000 , he drove in various kart series until 2006. In 2006, parallel to his involvement in karting, he also competed in the German Formula BMW , in which he partly competed for the Rosberg team . He was 19th at the Formula BMW World Finals. In 2007, Leimer switched to the Swiss team Jenzer Motorsport and competed in both the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and the Italian Formula Renault . In the Italian Formula Renault he reached eleventh place with two podium finishes, and in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup the 17th championship place.

In 2008 Leimer, who meanwhile drove for Jenzer Motorsport in the international Formula Master , showed an increase in performance and won the runner-up title behind Chris van der Drift with three race wins . In addition, Leimer completed a GP2 test for Trident Racing in November . In 2009 , Leimer contested his second season in the international Formula Master for Jenzer Motorsport. With seven wins in 16 races, Leimer won the championship he had dominated with one race weekend to go. In addition, on his seventh win, he set the record for the most wins in an IFM season. As a reward for his title, Leimer took part in a GP2 test day with DAMS .

After winning the championship, Leimer was signed by Ocean Racing Technology for the 2009/2010 GP2 Asia Series season . He did not manage to build on the successes from the international Formula Master and he finished 31st overall without any points. The Swiss then competed for Ocean Racing Technology in the 2010 European GP2 series . In the second race on the Circuit de Catalunya , Leimer won his first GP2 race. In the further course of the season, however, he did not manage to get more points. At the end of the season, Leimer was in 19th place in the championship. After setting several best times in the GP2 tests in November for Rapax , the championship team of the 2010 season, he was signed to Rapax for the GP2 Asia series and the GP2 series. In the GP2 Asia Series , he achieved second place as the best result and finished the season in fifth place overall. In the GP2 series , Leimer only scored points on two race weekends. As in the previous season, he won the sprint race on the Circuit de Catalunya. At the season finale, he finished second. He finished the season in 14th place in the drivers' championship. After the season he took for Racing Engineering at the GP2 Final in 2011 in part. He decided the main race for himself and won the GP2 final. He then made his debut in test drives for Sauber in a Formula 1 car.

For the GP2 series in 2012 , Leimer was finally signed by Racing Engineering. In the sprint race in as-Sachir he was in the lead for long stretches. However, because he had ignored yellow flags, he was given a drive-through penalty and finally crossed the finish line outside of the points in twelfth place. In Barcelona, Leimer again lost the chance of a podium due to a drive-through penalty. In third place, he was uncertainly let go during the pit stop from the point of view of the race management. He finally finished twelfth in this race as well. At Silverstone , he once again missed the opportunity to win. Starting from pole position, he initially led the race on a drying track. His team decided to carry out the mandatory pit stop as late as possible. However, before that there was a safety car phase from which all drivers who had already stopped benefited. Leimer lost the lead after his stop and was finally 14th. He did not manage to win in the remaining races of the season either. With six podium finishes, however, Leimer improved to seventh place in the drivers' standings. Following the GP2 season, Leimer completed BMW DTM test drives.

In 2013 , Leimer stayed with Racing Engineering in the GP2 series and contested his fourth season in this championship. At the season opener in Sepang he achieved his first main race victory in the GP2 series. One event later in as-Sachir, he won the main race again. After failing to win six events, he won the main race in Monza . With that he again took the lead in the drivers' championship, which he held after every race win. At the season finale on the Yas Marina Circuit , Leimer secured fourth place in the main race ahead of time and secured overall victory in the GP2 series. With 201 to 181 points he prevailed against Sam Bird . In 2013, Leimer scored more than three times as many points as his teammate Julian Leal .

In 2014 , Leimer switched to endurance racing. At Rebellion Racing he received an LMP1 cockpit in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). He formed a team with Andrea Belicchi and Dominik Kraihamer . After the trio had never reached the goal in the first half of the season, they always came into the points in the second half of the season. Sixth place was their best result and they finished 17th in the drivers' championship. In 2015 Leimer planned to move to Japan in the Super Formula . He had already signed a contract with Team Mugen . However, the engagement failed before the start of the season because his sponsor had not made the agreed payments. At the beginning of June, Leimer finally became a substitute pilot for the Formula 1 Manor team for the 2015 Formula 1 World Championship . In addition, at the end of June 2015 Leimer took part in two races of the FIA Formula E Championship for Virgin .
