Changes in the teams
DPR will no longer start in the 2011 season. With Carlin and Team AirAsia, two new teams will be starting. From this season onwards, the ART Grand Prix will be supported by Lotus Cars and will compete under the name "ART Lotus" . Since the AirAsia team belongs to the Lotus Racing team principal , the curious situation arises that Lotus Cars and Lotus Racing will compete against each other.
Changes during the season
- Davide Rigon suffered several broken bones in his left tibia and fibula at the season opener in Istanbul . He was represented by Kevin Ceccon on four race weekends . This made Ceccon the youngest GP2 pilot to date, at 17 years and 243 days. Luca Filippi then took over his cockpit. Filippi previously drove for Super Nova Racing and was replaced there by Adam Carroll .
- Christian Vietoris was represented by Álvaro Parente for the racing weekends in Barcelona and Monte Carlo after an accident in Istanbul . Vietoris suffered from a severe headache that made a break necessary. Despite the headache, he took part in a DTM race between the GP2 race weekends in Istanbul and Barcelona .
- Mikhail Aljoschin , who already had budget problems before the season, was replaced by Oliver Turvey after two race weekends . Turvey was in turn replaced after a race weekend by Álvaro Parente, who had previously driven for Racing Engineering. For the seventh race weekend Aljoschin took over the place with Carlin again for two race weekends. At the season finale, Parente received the cockpit again.
- The Team AirAsia was called after the third race weekend in Caterham Team AirAsia order.
- Kevin Mirocha was replaced by Brendon Hartley at Ocean Racing Technology after the seventh race weekend .
- Stefano Coletti was so seriously injured in an accident at Spa-Francorchamps that he was replaced by Stéphane Richelmi for the season finale . Coletti fractured two vertebrae.
Racing calendar
The 2011 GP2 Series season racing calendar was published on December 21, 2010. A total of nine racing weekends will be held, which will take place as part of the Formula 1 supporting program. In contrast to 2010, the race weekend of the Formula 1 season finale in Abu Dhabi is not part of the championship.
