Stéphane Richelmi (born March 17, 1990 in Monte Carlo ) is a Monegasque automobile racing driver . He competed in the GP2 series from 2011 to 2014 .

Career

Richelmi began his motorsport career in karting in 2001 , in which he was active until 2005. In 2006 he made his debut in formula racing in the Belgian Formula Renault 1.6 and finished his first season in twelfth place overall. In 2007 he switched to the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and also took part in two Italian Formula Renault races. He remained without points in both series. In 2008 he started again in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup, but left the series two race weekends before the end of the season without scoring points. He also started at the beginning of the season in the Western European Formula Renault, in which he finished 16th overall, and as a guest starter in the Formula 3 Euro Series for the last three races of the season .

In 2009 , Richelmi started eight out of ten race weekends in the British Formula 3 Championship and finished the season in 19th place overall. He was more successful in the Italian Formula 3 championship , in which he entered for the third race weekend at RC Motorsport . Richelmi finished two races in second place and was sixth overall at the end of the season. In 2010 he stayed in the Italian Formula 3 championship and moved to Lucidi Motors . Richelmi won his first race on the first race weekend. With a total of four wins he was runner- up behind César Ramos . As a reward for this achievement, he was given the opportunity to take part in Formula 1 test drives for Scuderia Ferrari at the beginning of December .

In 2011 , Richelmi competed for International Draco Racing in Formula Renault 3.5 . With a seventh place as the best result, he finished the season in 26th place in the overall standings. In addition, he took part in an event of the GP2 series for Trident Racing as a substitute for his injured compatriot Stefano Coletti . After the season he competed again for Trident Racing at the 2011 GP2 Final and finished 26th.

In 2012 , Richelmi contested the entire GP2 season for Trident. In the main race in Hockenheim , he achieved his first GP2 podium finish in third place. He finished the season in 18th place. Internally, he prevailed against Julian Leal with 25 to 9 points. In 2013 , Richelmi switched to DAMS , the championship team of the previous season, within the GP2 series . At the main race in Silverstone , he achieved his best GP2 position to date with a second place, which was also his only podium finish of the season. In the championship he improved to eighth place. Internally he was defeated by Marcus Ericsson with 103 to 121 points. In 2014 , Richelmi stayed at DAMS and got a new teammate in Jolyon Palmer . In the second main race in Barcelona, Richelmi stalled the engine while on pole position and had to start out of the pits. At his home race weekend in Monte Carlo , he won the sprint race and achieved his first GP2 victory. He stood on the podium one more time. While his teammate Palmer won the championship with 276 points, Richelmi achieved ninth place overall with 73 points.
