Stefano Coletti (born April 6, 1989 in Monte Carlo ) is a Monegasque automobile racing driver . He started in 2009 and from 2011 to 2014 in the GP2 series . In 2015 he drove in the IndyCar Series . In 2017 he will again compete in the GP2 series, which is now running under the name FIA Formula 2 Championship.

He is the brother of ski racer Alexandra Coletti .

Career

From 2000 to 2004 Coletti was in karting active and gave in 2005 in the German Formula BMW debut in Formula racing . Coletti took 18th place in the overall ranking. He stayed in this series for another year and finished seventh overall. He also contested some races in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and the US Formula BMW, where he finished fifth in the championship. At the world finals of the Formula BWM he came third. In 2007 Coletti was mainly active in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and finished fourth in the overall ranking. Coletti also started in the Italian Formula Renault .

In 2008 Coletti switched to Signature Plus in the Formula 3 Euro Series . After just two race weekends, he left the team after Red Bull had stopped promoting him. After a race weekend break, Coletti switched to the Prema Powerteam , for which he contested the remaining races of the season. In the overall standings, Coletti, who scored points in three races, finished 20th. In the 2009 season Coletti stayed with Prema Powerteam in the Formula 3 Euro Series and won his first race in this championship at the first race of the season in Hockenheim . At the race at the Norisring , Coletti caused a scandal: after almost half the race distance, Coletti was in third place behind Jules Bianchi and Alexander Sims when the race had to be interrupted due to heavy rain. Due to the 40-minute time limit, it was only possible to drive one lap behind the safety car after the restart . After the end of the race, Coletti accused the victorious ART Grand Prix team of deliberately allowing themselves a lot of time when changing tires in order to have to do as few laps as possible after the restart. When Bianchi and Coletti met on the way to the paddock after the awards ceremony, Coletti hit Bianchi in the face with his fist. Coletti was then excluded from the race weekend and his third place was revoked.

In August 2009 Coletti made his debut on the Valencia Street Circuit in the GP2 series , replacing Davide Valsecchi at Durango . During his second race weekend in Spa-Francorchamps , Coletti had a serious accident in the Eau Rouge and was therefore unable to take part in the sprint race and the race weekend in Monza . In addition, Coletti had to forego a Formula 3 Euro Series race weekend because of his injury. At the end of the season he finished tenth overall in the Formula 3 Euro Series and 25th overall in the GP2 series. After taking part in a Formula Renault 3.5 race in 2009 , Coletti decided to work with Comtec Racing in this series in 2010 . With a second place as the best result, the sixth place overall. At the same time, he competed in the GP3 series for Tech 1 Racing . He joined the series at the second race weekend of the 2010 season and finished ninth overall with two third places. He also started the Auto GP at a race weekend .

In 2011 Coletti competed for Trident Racing in the GP2 series and the GP2 Asia series . In the GP2 Asia Series, he finished the season with a win in fourth place overall. In the GP2 series, he achieved his first GP2 victory at the season opener in Istanbul . On the Hungaroring he managed to win the sprint race from 21st place. He chose the right strategy for the race, which was characterized by changing weather conditions. One race later at Spa-Francorchamps, Coletti had a serious accident - like two years earlier on this track. In the rain, he overlooked the fact that Mikhail Aljoschin was slowing down because of an engine problem and hit him. His car picked up and hit the asphalt. In the process, he broke two vertebrae . This injury ended his season prematurely. In the overall standings, he took eleventh place. After the season he took for Scuderia Coloni in the GP2 Final in 2011 , which he finished in 13th place, in part. He then made his debut in test drives for Scuderia Toro Rosso in a Formula 1 car.

In 2012 Coletti started the GP2 season for Coloni. In the first ten events, Coletti achieved third place as the best result. As the expectations set at the beginning of the season were not met, Coloni and Coletti parted ways before the last two race weekends. Coletti received a cockpit at Rapax for these two events . He managed to score points in three out of four races. Coletti finished 13th in the drivers' championship. As Coletti and Rapax found out during the four races that the collaboration was working well, Coletti received a contract with Rapax for the 2013 GP2 series in October 2012 . At the season opener in Sepang , he achieved pole position, a third place in the main race and a victory in the sprint race. After finishing second and third on the podium in as-Sachir , he won the sprint race at the next events in Barcelona and Monte Carlo . With his win in Monte Carlo, for the first time in 82 years a Monegasse achieved a home win on the racetrack. Louis Chiron was last victorious at the Monaco Grand Prix in 1931 . During the rest of the season he only scored points in one race in third place. Nevertheless, his points lead was enough to lead the overall standings for four more race weekends. Coletti ended the season in fifth place. With 135 to 20 points, he clearly prevailed against Simon Trummer internally . He also took part in an event of the European Formula 3 Championship and the Macau Grand Prix .

In 2014 Coletti switched to Racing Engineering within the GP2 series . He won the sprint race in Hockenheim and on Yas Island . He prevailed internally against Raffaele Marciello with 136 to 74 points and was sixth overall at the end of the season. In addition, Coletti again took part in an event of the European Formula 3 championship and the Macau Grand Prix .

In 2015 Coletti left the GP2 series and moved to North America for the IndyCar Series at KV Racing Technology . Eighth place at the Angie's List Grand Prix of Indianapolis was his only place in the top 10. He finished the season in 19th place overall. Internally he was clearly defeated by Sébastien Bourdais with 203 to 406 points.

In 2017 Coletti returned to the GP2 series, which is now called the FIA Formula 2 Championship. There he drove for Campos Racing . However, he had to give up the cockpit after the first race weekend for family reasons. Roberto Merhi took over for him .
