Diocese of Gothenburg
The Diocese of Göteborg ( Swedish Göteborgs stift ) is one of the thirteen dioceses within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden . It consists of eleven church districts ( contract ), in which there are a total of 30 independent parishes ( församlingar ) and 39 pastorates with several parishes. The seat of the bishop is Gothenburg with Gothenburg Cathedral as the episcopal church. Susanne Rappmann has been the bishop since 2018 .
history
The diocese was spun off from the Diocese of Skara as an independent superintendent in 1620 and initially only comprised a few districts in the west of the historical Västergötland landscape in addition to the city of Gothenburg . Halland was added in 1646, and in 1658 the greater part of Bohuslän conquered from Norway . The diocese of Karlstad also gave the northern part of Bohuslän to the Diocese of Gothenburg in 1693, which essentially retained the extent that it still has today. Since 1665 the superintendents have had the title of bishop. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the diocese was the stronghold of Schartauanism, a strictly orthodox revival movement originating from Henric Schartau , which still characterizes some communities, especially in Bohuslän.
