The coat of arms of the diocese

The diocese of Luleå ( Swedish Luleå stift ) is one of the thirteen dioceses within the (Lutheran) Church of Sweden . It consists of 57 parishes ( församlingar ), which are grouped into eight church districts ( kontrakt ).

Geographically, the diocese extends over the provinces of Västerbottens län and Norrbottens län and thus over a third of the Swedish national territory . This makes it the largest Lutheran diocese in the country by area. It was only formed in 1904 by separating the northern part of the diocese of Härnösand . Since the foundation, the number of members has increased significantly; In 2013 it was 391,000, which corresponds to 76.6% of the resident population. Church work also takes place in Sami , Finnish and Meänkieli .

The bishopric is the city of Luleå with Luleå Cathedral as the episcopal church. Hans Stiglund has been Bishop of Luleå since 2002 .
